iwas wondering if anyone can tell me what size hitch ball was used on a 72 stratoflyte 18 thanks in advance andy

Most everything Shasta made through the 60's an 70's, till '75 when Coachmen came to own the name, were 2" ball as a standard.

As a general rule all trailers that weigh less than 3500 lb and manufactured from the sixties on use a 2 inch ball. the next size up uses a 2 5/16 ball and you ccan see the difference as that coupler is much heavier duty and looks huge compared to a 2 inch hitch. I don't remember ever seeing an 1 7/8 hitch on any full size camper made in the last 60 years, as they had a 2000 pound limit.
