Why would they make anything easy there. Back in 1974 I just decided to leave California. Probably not what you were looking for. What did Gallagher say? California was like a bowl of granola, what aint nuts and fruits, is flakes.

Try going through a dmv middle man, they are outside registration agents. Sometimes you can do it through triple A. They know the system and will probably register your trailer somewhere out of state first and then transfer the title...I don't ask questions. They work their magic. There is one in el cajon we used, they were not fun to deal with because they took forever, i wouldn't recommend them ...but our tiled hadn't been registered since 2003 and the whole lost title, no Registration problem costed us a fraction of what the dmv wanted.
Nobody wants to deal with the dmv which is why these places exist. Look into trying it out before you go crazy with the dmv.

There is nothing you can do if it's in the system and your's sounds like it is. You are at the mercy of the DMV. Even an outside source can not do anything about that in CA. This is why when I DO go out and buy a trailer that is not current or has no title I check with the DMV first before I purchase. Sorry for the bad news.

I had the same problem with CA trailer I bought. I went on line to the State of Maine and got a license through Haskell Registration ( Register@haskellregistration.com). They are great and Maine doesn't care where the trailer is located. It was going to cost over a $1000 to reg. in Ca because the previous owner did not get it reg. for years. When I sold the trailer I gave them the old CA plate and they re-registered it as a DEAD plate in CA. It is a cost effective work around to the really ridiculous CA registration rule. BTY I think it cost $80 total.

Believe me if they ever figure it out they will put the kibosh on it. Now I wonder if it will work for a trailer that has been legally scrapped? ?

If the trailer has not been registered in CA for years, maybe they know it is impossible to prove the camper was not taken from CA (right around the time the CA registration ran out) to Maine and that is why it was no longer registered in CA. Who's to say it has not just returned full circle back to CA after all these years. Shoot, lots of companies incorporate in Delaware and that incorporation is viewed as legal in CA, even if the company has never actually done any business in Delaware. Just a wag...

Yes but she is saying it is still on the books. Normally, as far as I know, Once a trailer has not been registered for 10 years it falls off the books unless it has been legally scrapped. So once it falls off the books, the fines cease to exist. If it has been legally scrapped it never falls off the books. I have two like that. You can un-scrap a trailer by taking it to a licensed inspection station to have the brakes and lamps inspected. Then you can take it to the DMV and get a new salvage title for it.

I feel your pain, Christopher. I jumped thru the hoops to register my Airstream Argosy to the tune of $500, kept it registered for 3 years while I restored it, then sold it to someone in Utah Dum-dum me. This time I only looked at trailers with Cal. current registration. If they said sold with bill of sale I passed. Kommiefornia oops my bad spelling, is broke and will do anything for $$. Moving out of state is not always an option.

Now see, I registered a scrapped trailer in Co. and had no problem at all. The inspection consisted of an special officer walking around it once and taking my $20 then he attached the new vin plate. No questions were asked, no lights checked, nothing. Had to make an appointment, so it only took about 15 min. Of course it was an hour drive to get there from my house. I once bought an old Vespa scooter to restore and it had no paperwork. I was here in Texas then, so I registered it in Maine, all by mail, I got the paper work off the internet somehow. They sent me a tag which I used for a year then re did it in Texas. Easy Pezy. I would try that approach, as the cost is very low. Good luck, Wayne
