... because today I saw a beautiful, large and modern RV - towing a putrid green port-a-potty. The unit was a typical industrial single-stall building like you see at festivals and fairs. It was mounted on a tiny trailer, and it had reflector tape along the top and brake lights built in to the body, and trailer license plate. There was 4 of us in the car, all with cell phones, and no one thought to get a picture because we were hitting the brakes and hanging our heads out the window for a close-up glimpse before the RV turned onto another road.
Once on a back road between small towns in Arkansas, I saw a very old man driving an ancient small forklift with the bucket fully extended up while he was driving across the gravel parking lot of a small bait and grocery store. In the bucket was (presumably) his very old wife, in a bonnet and work apron, and she was being driven toward a very old and tall wooden sign where (presumably) she was going to perform repairs or additions.
Once on an Arizona highway, we rounded a corner at the full speed limit only to find a bunch of (because I don't know if it would be a flock, a herd, a gaggle...) of emus, who had escaped from a nearby emu ranch. They were on the hillside, and all over the road, not in a hurry, and kind of walked around each other in confusion, each going different ways while highway traffic was rounding that bend at high speeds and desperately aiming for the shoulders.
A friend drives freight and prefers driving at night. He now avoids parts of New Mexico if possible because of "ufo's or whatever they were". He has seen them a few times and the last time scared him so bad he won't talk about it, so we have no idea what it was but you can sure see the change in him when the subject comes up...

Many many years ago I was traveling on I-80 from San Francisco to Salt Lake. If you've ever had the pleasure to travel 80 through Nevada you know there is NOTHING out there. No houses, no roads, no trees, no rivers, nothing. Anyway, a couple hours east of Reno we drove past a beat up and rusted out old Chevy truck. It was just sitting on the side of the highway. Leaned up against the open tailgate was a plywood board with "Fresh Fish" spay painted on it. The back of the truck was filled with ice that was melting and forming a small river across the roadway. As we got closer we could see the top layer of silvery fish carcasses were baking in the sun where the ice had melted away.
Needless to say, we did not stop to sample his wares.

Not so much something that I saw, but I remember it well. I was once headed up highway 99 in California, on my way to Bass Lake. We stopped in the town of Tulare to fuel up. As my husband went inside to pay for the gas, I was at the back of our Suburban mixing a bottle for my infant son. An older (intoxicated) gent ambled up to admire my baby and share stories of the children he had raised. I have never forgotten the words of wisdom that he imparted to me before drifting on his way. "They sure is cute when they's little, but damn if they don't growed up to be trouble makers!"

Not sure if this qualifies as "weirdest roadside thing", but it WAS memorable. About 40 years ago I took a cross country trip in a van, towing two Harleys with a couple of friends. We were on our way to Mount Rushmore (South Dakota) when we spotted an old Navajo guy hitchiking. We picked him up and he told us, "I been walkin' all day.... from Rapid (City)." Poor guy was dehydrated and hungry, and he didn't have any teeth. We offered him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and a glass of milk. (It was all we had!) I don't think he'd EVER had milk before, and after taking a bite of his sandwich he looked up at us with a glazed look in his eyes and said, "Sure is sticky". Maybe sad to say, it was one of the funniest moments in my life.

Wow, Turbodaddy - 40 years ago was when only real bikers rode bikes! My father and his best friend were stationed in Pueblo, CO, they were pilots for the Army in the late 1940's. Pueblo is near the base of the Rocky Mountains and there is some good riding back there. They had pulled over on their bikes on a mountain highway and a couple other bikers pulled over, too, and they all hung out for a bit. One had an Indian, and my father and his friend could not believe their eyes when they realized the guy on the Indian was Clark Gable - also a pilot stationed in Pueblo. Mr. Gable talked my dad's friend into letting him ride his Harley Knucklehead down the road and back, and off he went down the road while they waited, and they waited, then they waited some more. He did finally come back over a half hour later. They never ran into each other again.

This isn't the weirdest thing I have seen along the road side but it's a good start.

One of the weirdest things I saw recently was a 1969 Scotty Hilander in my rear view mirrors, especially when it sunk in that the damn thing was hitched to my truck.

I once saw a horse tied up at an Oakdale McDonalds. The cowboy inside was a grizzled looking chap. I wish I had engaged him in conversation...after he had got his coffee!
