This weekend I was restoring part of the street side wall of my 1950 Alma. There was a roof leak that the po never did anything about: At the bottom of the wall, you'll notice the skirt board has carriage bolts going through it. When I cut out the rotten section, you can see that the carriage bolts go through a 6" tall "j" shaped piece of steel that's welded to the outriggers and encircles the entire perimeter of the trailer: This explains why the 30 foot Alma is almost twice the weight of our '60 22 foot DeCamp! I don't have much experience with camper construction, but from the DeCamp and from what I've seen here this looks like unusual construction. Has anyone else seen this? BTW, I sanded off the loose rust, gave it a phosphoric acid treatment, and then primed and painted the metal before replacing all the rotten wood:

Is the Alma a park model?

RinTin, It came from the factory with propane tanks and a fresh water tank, so I don't think so, although I'm not entirely certain how to tell in a 1950. Here's an advertisement for it, and it certainly seems targeted to being moved around:

Indeed, according to the ad it seems well set up for towing.
The ad also has the answer to your roof seam question, just break out your "famous" Heliarc welder.

RinTin,
In certain circles, my heliarc welder is quite famous!
It's also has a marine toilet -- which isn't famous at all.
Have you seen that kind of construction on other trailers?

Brian,
Aren't marine toilets famous for malfunctioning at the worst possible moment?
I haven't seen much, especially larger trailers. Sorry, I am not familiar with your roof seam.
