davek,
If you plan to re-use the old 1/4" Masonite substrate, prepare it by cleaning all the goop off and scuffing the entire surface with a belt sander using 60 or 80 grit sandpaper.

I use good quality 3/16" plywood as a backer and Contact Cement to glue the Formica to that. Have had very good luck with it. Masonite available today isn't as "tough" as it used to be. I never thought about Masonite as a base. Let us know if you go with that...

as a kitchen designer and installer, I would use a good quality plywood instead of Masonite. 3M has a great spray contact glue...available at HD or Lowes, its caledl Spray 90 _(green can) Spay both surfaces, let tack, repeat with a 2nd coat, let tack, and apply,(I trim with a roller bearing flush cutting router bit, but if you're using 1/4" ply, make sure bit will ride on the edge of the plywood and still cut the formica. You can sand the edge down with a belt sander IF you are careful... make sure belt direction is pulling formica towards plywood or you may damage the laminate of tear it off.

That is exactly what I did. Worked out great. Here it is not yet attached to the cabnit.

I just did one. Be sure to use plenty of contact cement on both parts.
