Good Afternoon Ladies and Gents! I have the Turnpike skinned, all except for the roof. The top edges of the walls, where the roof and wall seams meet are shredded with very little support. I need to get this vent out to float and roll the roof. Is there a way to do this from the inside as I am very leery of trying to get up on the top to get it out the conventional way. By the way, the vent is stuck in the closed position, the crank lifts for one turn then the lid flops back down. Thanks! Kendra

Kendra, you may want to go shopping for a new vent. The 14" vents are still the standard today, and most will not come with the metal cover. If you build a sort-of scaffold out of 2X4 or 2x6 lumber that lays across the width of the roof, you can lay plywood across the spans to support your weight and spread it out so that you do not damage the roof skin. The more spanning the better... the further you can spread the load out to the side walls the less tension on the roof skin and the trusses. It will allow you to work fairly freely on the vent in the middle of the roof without worry of putting a foot through the skin...

Your roof looks to be in great shape. All I see is a little goop along the seams. If you plan to salvage the roof, you will have to remove the vent from above. Like Ten said, lay a 2x4 flat on the roof along each outside edge, along the top of the walls. Then lay a couple 2x6's over and perpendicular to the 2x4's, spanning the roof from edge to edge. You can spread the 2x6's apart and lay plywood over them to make a wider platform if needed. You shouldn't have any trouble with the rotten wood.

I didn't understand the part about laying the 2 x 4's along the edges and THEN putting the 2 x 6's and ply wood across! I was picturing in my head: 2 x 6's across the span of the roof, edge to edge; and was thinking, there's NO way that is going to hold me and the sides and the roof all at once! Thank you so much for the clarifications Tin and Ten! I've seen a lot of people replace their vents with a Fantastic Fan. Good idea? Bad idea? I do plan to re-use the roof. Thanks for your time and expertise. Kendra
