Hi all, I have put lots of time into trying to refurbish my baby moons. After looking at reviews on line about the flimsy quality of the ones they are selling now, I thought I would try to restore the old ones. After applying some of the methods I read about here, I found that I could only go so far so I had them professionally sand blasted and then I primed them myself. Then I bought a kit from Auto Zone that I thought was going to be the answer but after many applications of spray their appearance did not change at all so back to the professionals. I figured I would spend the extra money to get them powder coated. After over a month, they called and said they could not do anything with them and restored them back to the way I had them. Now I am back to square one! I have spray painted the rims turquoise and I really wanted to have the hubs a shiny chrome or as close to that as possible. Should I give up? Here is what they look like now.

For people with hub caps like Scotty's, with logos, etc on them, there is a rattle can product that seems to actually look like chrome;
www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Mirror-Chrome-Aerosol-Paint/dp/B0015H1FGA
My caps were rough, one so rusty it will never polish up, so I did a few hours of google and youtube seeing lots of disappointing promises from major name paint brands. There are some youtubes on SPAZ Stix paint that look impressive so I asked our local auto paint supplier about it and he gave it a thumbs up. Before abandoning your classic caps, check it out. ***I am in no way affiliated with this product or being paid for an endorsement (but I will eventually be staying at a holiday inn (parking lot))***

Ya gootta follow the instruction closely though and that may eliminate a number of us. Maybe one of the hotrod guys know about it.

I got mine from VTS. How do you install them without denting? They seem flimsy.

I have the original 1965 moons shined up pretty nice, but can't get them on without beating the crap out of them... any suggestions?

Hi all, thanks so much for the input. Kirkadie I am excited about your suggestion. One more shot at the originals; I hope it works.
While the replicas are inexpensive; they are not exactly the right size for me and I did hear that they were a little flimsy. Although it doesn't show in my photo, mine have the raised point in the center.
That being said, I do love the way they look on your trailer nccamper!

I just did some research on Youtube as well and one guy also recommends VHT Plate Finish as a second choice. Of course reviews are always mixed on Amazon. My hubs are not smooth so I might also use a pore filler called Magic Coat found at Michael's Craft Store and recommended on same video. Then micro mesh 1500 to smooth the surface out. Might be worth a shot. I know prep is 90% of the job so we will see.

The rims often get replaced over the years and the moons don't fit as well. I have a camper with the same issue.
VTS caps fit perfectly on our original Shasta rims but not the newer replacements.

Once upon a time. Any good automotive part store could recommend a chrome shop that would rechrome parts. I don't know if that is still true. But you could ask.

I'm just throwing this out there as another source. I have no experience with this company and am not recommending as such, but the more info you can collect the better.... www.hubcapmike.com/baby-moons.htmlwww.hubcapmike.com/baby-moon-measure.htmlI know that VTS specifically states that the moons they stock won't fit certain rims they stock, and this explains the difference. I am sure that is a general problem as you would get into a more "modern" rim as opposed to the ones made in the early 60's. What I have read about re-chroming is that it is quite expensive anywhere one might go to have it done.
