So there I was this morning driving back and forth between our two Big Box Stores Lowes and Home Depot for a cheap 5 gallon bucket of sealer/primer for the 4X8 sheets of hardiboard sheathing I have put on an 8X8 storage shed I am building. Found out you don't look for the cheapie 5 gallon buckets of stuff on a Friday, but on Mondays when people bring back stuff they over estimated for their projects on the weekend before. No joy, but there was still a place called Hoods Discount Building Supplies between the two stores. They did not even have a paint department, but as I was wandering around I spied a sign that said 3X7 Birch Door Skins $4.95. There before me was, what looked like a 4 foot high stack of 1/8" birch plywood at just under $5 a sheet. Have I missed the discussion about Door Skins used as interior paneling? Or is it the fact that they are only 3' wide? Anyway. I am contemplating buying about 20 3X7 sheets of it @ $5 bucks a pop ($100 total) and storing it until I start in on my first tiny homebuilt. Has anyone had any good or bad experience with birch door skins as interior paneling?

VB, I remember Vikx mentioning this as an alternative for birch plywood before, as the door skins are bendable for the application of the canned ham paneling. It sure seems as though 1/8" birch is 1/8" birch, and it should shellac the same and all. With the lacking of sources for 1/8" birch in some parts of the nation, including here, maybe you should think about investing $1000 or so, and peddling it door-to-door!
P.S. I don't have any experience with it, but am going to look for some in our next outing....

Hey VB, no reason at all you couldn't use them. Just space your framing to land at 36" O.C. Good find!!

since most trailers are 6' 6" or 7' wide, how much better could you get?

I'll be down there in few days; you're going to have to tell me where that place is. It sounds like my kind of place. I don't know if I'll ever need birch again but sounds like my kind of place.

Those of us with Ash paneling would like to know if they make Oak skins? Oak comes a close second to hard to find Ash.
Thanks,
Rod

I finally got off my lazy butt and went back to Hoods, and after sorting through about 200 skins, which did not even make a dent in the stacks they had, I bought 18 almost "clear" nice skins and 8 darker overall skins. 26 3X7 1/8" birch door skins @ $4.99 each. Total cost with tax was just under $140. Could be the beginning of a project.

What a great deal.
5'x5' panels are all I've found near me. Not really much use.

Sorry SusieQ but I floated a loan and bought the whole lot...they were delivered to my hobby shop in Saucier, and my new business sign will be erected tomorrow...Vintagebruce's Skin Shop...my first advertisement has elicited some pretty weird phone calls, but apparently there are a lot of vintage camper owners that want to do strange things to their damaged doors.

Bruce, I am ROFL! I may be your first customer. I'll sport some custom skin and advertise for you, God knows it's already vintage.

stumbled onto this old thread today - I recently purchased some old doors and removed the skins from them. I have enough to do the walls and cabinets for my trailer rebuild (they are just a little too short for the ceiling panels unfortunately. The original paneling in the trailer was 3/16" cheap paneling, so I was a little hesitant about replacing with 1/8" but really didn't want to spend the money on 1/4" if I didn't have to.
These are mid-century birch door skins that have a great look to them so if I could use them it would be great?
Any concerns with going with 1/8" birch paneling instead of 1/4"? The trailer is down to bare wall framing now so I could add extra framing as needed.
Thanks!!!
