Some of the Ash on ceiling of my compact looks dry and cracking. Does anyone know what the cause of this would be? Does it need to be replaced? or just sanded and resealed? This is the best photo of it I could capture

Just sand it and re-seal it. You may not be able to find ash available anymore anyway.

You might also try scraping the finish. It looks like shellac and may peel right off. We use a sharp plane blade with the grain. The cause may have been moisture or excess heat. Hard to tell, but you should be able to save the ash.
