I've seen post here about using .040 aluminum from semi trailer repair places for a one piece roof. I am rebuilding a 69 Serro Scotty Hilander with the tight radiuses in the roof line. The Scotty roof metal just butts up to the side wall aluminum, it does not fold over, and is topped off with butyl tape and an aluminum cap rail with spiral nails through the top. My question is will the thicker aluminum bend the tight radiuses of the Hilander roofline? The original aluminum is .020 thick.

Jimmylee, I am also doing a 69 Hilander rebuild, have thought about semi trailer skin for a one piece roof (only place with skin wide enough).I have a Polar dealer here in town with 4' aluminum the same thickness as our original skin and can do a Pittsburgh seam so I' thinking about having new side skin going about an inch higher than the walls and bending THEM over. Then the roof can be flush, taped, and original J rails put back on. Make any sense?

That does sound good, I will need some replacement side panels too, but not the top side pieces, mine looks like some kids were practicing their knife throwing with lots of holes. The butt seams don't seem adequate to me either. Another reason I wanted a one piece roof was the flat lapped roof seams that were nailed all the way across the flat part of the roof were both leaking.
