A couple years ago when I got the tires for my old trailer the tire store told me that balancing was not necessary on trailer tires because you would not feel the vibrations. I'm getting ready to purchase tires for the traveler and they are now saying that its needed because the vibrations stress the wheel bearings.
I'm not trying to be cheap, but also do not like throwing away money. Do you have your new tires balanced?

I've been told the same thing! However, some companies want to balance, some don't. Personally, if it's yours, I'd balance the tires. It doesn't cost a whole lot ($18?) and why not?

You might not "feel the vibration" when sitting in your tow, but the body of the trailer sure will. When I saw how many weights my tire dealer put on a pair of expensive Continental tires, the extra few bucks for balancing the STs for your trailer seems like a no-brainer.

Trailer tires should be balanced for the following reasons 1 an out of balance tire will have increased tread wear or "cupping" which shortens the life of the tire. 2 Vibrations caused by an out of balance tire cause extra wear on the entire trailer starting at the springs and continuing all the way through the trailer. Vibrations cause screws, bolts, and fasteners to loosen or fail. They cause metal fatigue in all metal parts of the trailer from they frame to the skin. Vibrations also cause wood joints to loosen and fail. 3 Vibrations even lead to premature seam leakage. caused as the skins move slightly it stresses all sealed areas. What this means is you probably won't see the damage right away but it will keep multiplying until you do. 4 A severely out of balance tire can even cause towing problems.

Just put a new set of Carlisle ST 175/80/R13s on my Compact. Not only did they balance the new tires, they balanced the spare which was the better of the two original tires, which were not balanced. Runs great.
