I had no idea where to put this thread so I landed here. I am now into my 3rd year of repair/rehabilitation but getting close to being done. I realized that will mean (HORRORS) I'll have to pull it at some point. (Visions of the Long, Long Trailer are beginning to dance in my head.) My next realization was that I have no idea how to locate campgrounds. I went online and found a GoodSam site and the first campground I clicked on, just for grins, was $45/night. Seriously? So experienced ones, would you fill me on on the best place to find camping possibilities? Thank you all.

We like State Parks. Really never been to one that we didn't like or had any sort of issues. The "Campground Hosts" and Park Rangers are great. The average site cost is between $18.00 and $28.00 per night.
We also really enjoy private campgrounds, as well. That cost depends on where it is located. We have spent as little as $33.00 per night.....all the way up to $90.00 per night. The $90.00 sites were at Sugarloaf KOA, only 20 miles from Key West, Florida.

If you have a smart phone, there is an app called The Ultimate Campground Project. It's an ever growing organized database (user supplied) of campgrounds of all types, state, BLM, county, military, you name it. Information is quite accurate and often updated and it links you to other internet sources for deeper info on each campsite. It also places the campgrounds on a non static Google type map that you can actively move around and search an area. Campgrounds are clearly marked by type. It's especially effective in 'satelite' view. You can literally zoom in and see the trailer parking spots in some cases. There's really nothing else as complete or like it. I have other similar apps and they all have huge gaps in information. This one is as close to complete as possible.

I was thinking of writing a book called seeing America for free using Walmart and Cracker Barrel parking lots.

An app called Ultimate CG Project is excellent for state parks, federal, BLM, etc.

Swirlygirls, Thanks for asking this question, and thanks to all of you tech-savvy folks who replied. Some really useful apps that I never would have found by myself.

There is also a National Park app. The basic app is free. We also have been Passport America members in the past and the membership paid for itself in the savings when traveling cross country. They have an app and a hard copy book of their campgrounds. 50% discount but there are some stipulations with certain campgrounds such as no weekends or discount good for one night.

Thank you all! If I ever go camping, I'll PM you to hunt for campgrounds. My phone is so dumb all it does is ring... LOL

I usually decide what town I want to go to, then do a Google search for campgrounds in that area. I have only camped in Maine, and our rates are generally $28 - $30 / nigh for full hookups.

Thank you so much everyone! This is great information. I do have a Smartphone but must admit it's smarter than me. However, I've just successfully installed Apple TV and a Bluetooth so I'm girding my loins and going for the apps. I also appreciate the information about cost. I'm not surprised a campground near Key West cost so much given how much hotel rooms cost there.

This is one of the coolest sites for finding FREE camping if you are into boondocking. There are a lot of BLM sites for free out West, but you can even find free or really, really cheap ($4) spots on our side of the Mississippi with this map. There are other "free" sites and some BLM land sites out there, too if you search but take a look at this one. freecampsites.net/
