I just bought 50 yards of 1/2" ivory double fold bias tape off amazon for $13. I'll get some cord to put in it and it should be easy to sew up. My panels will be pre finished before we put them up, so the shellac shouldn't be a problem. Crossing my fingers this works.

Bias tape is pretty strong. That was a good deal, btw. My only concern would be that if it is dressmakers tape, over time it might deteriorate. But you will probably be good for another 30 years or so
