The real world definition of Unobtainium... unobtainium: An imaginary unavailable material used humourously to solve otherwise impossible problems; an item of unaffordable price The Trailer World Definition of Unobtainium... 1/8" Ash Plywood What your looking at is 18 sheets of Ash Plywood, now before you ask where I got or where you can get it, or is it for sale let me tell you I made it. I laminated Ash veneer to 1/8" luan plywood. At my material cost, it averaged $66.00 a sheet, $43.00 for each Ash veneer sheet, $12 for each sheet of Luan, $10 a sheet for the glue($60 a gallon and I can get 6 sheets per gallon) $1-2 in misc supplies like rollers and gloves per sheet. here is a pic just to prove I made it,

Better add in your labor and stocking costs, maybe a "pretty smart" fee as well. Ya can't just give things away.

Nicely done.
I'm guessing the glue is contact cement?
My 65 Aloha paneling is either Oregon White Oak or Ash. Hmmmmm..........

Yes the glue was a contact glue, it is a professional water based glue, not available at big box stores. More than likely your paneling is what was referred to a Japanese Ash, white ash is the same. White oak has a greenish tone to it where as Ash is very blonde.

Thanks for sharing the idea schweet! It opens up a whole new range of interior possibilities. I once got on a veneer web site that had some beautiful veneers and had me wondering what a bird's eye maple interior would do to the viewer's eyesight. I was actually looking for a veneer I think was blood maple I saw in a mid 40's camper. It was blood something and had gorgeous red streaking in it.

But that was a long time ago. Was at a job site recently and the p-lam installer was using water based, he swore by it, guess I'll have to give it another try. I too buy from wholesale distributors so have access to the good stuff. Japanese Ash, I vaguely remember that. Here in the PNW there used to be a plethora of plywood mills, that's why I thought maybe a local wood species since Aloha's were built in Oregon.

Definition of Unobtanium: 1/4 inch birch panel in 4 X 8 sheets in upstate New York. There should be a picture of my Airflyte next to the definition....

I bought some ash veneer to do the exact same thing. And then it turned out that I ordered the wrong cut type. I got quartersawn instead of flat cut, and the grain pattern isn't anything like the original panels. I opted for the peel-and-stick type of veneer instead of buying an expensive tub of glue because I only needed one panel. And that fact makes the veneer unreturnable. Sigh. Congratulations on your successful effort and I hope your success carries across the ether to the rest of us!
