I bought a half frosted globe from VTS and my current mantle sticks out of the bottom of the globe. Do I have a mantle that is too long or did I buy too small of a globe? I'm not sure of the gas light brand in my 1969 cardinal, but the globe fits well. Any thoughts?

Where did you buy the mantle? Coleman mantles might light, and fit on a propane light, but they are not correct.
VTS sells the "propane mantles", and they reportedly (I have not tested) burn brighter than using Coleman mantles with Propane gas. The VTS mantles I have purchased are not as long as in your photo.
Buy plenty..........every time you hit your head on the light, your going to break the mantle. I just install the mantles, and don't burn them until they are ready for use, so they don't break.

Thanks for the reply, John. The mantle came with the trailer. I bought the globe because it was missing when we picked the cardinal up. I bet the PO bought a Coleman mantle or other brand. I will check VTS.

You can order them from Amazon, also. About the same price as VTS but shipping charges may be more reasonable.

Is that mantle been burnt off yet if not it will shrink in size. also be careful when handling new mantles, as oily fingerprints will cause dark spots and reduce light output.

Thanks, SuzieQ. I will check them out, too.
Bigbill, I don't think that it has been burnt yet. It looks to be new, and I haven't touched it. I forgot that they shrink when lit. Maybe it is the right size and just needs to be lit once. I really don't know how much, if at all, I will use it. Just nice to have one. Thanks again!

If it's been burnt, it will be a very, very pale grey color, and yes, it will shrink. It looks new. We didn't know about the Coleman mantles. That's what we've used in Hamlet for five years and haven't had any problems. Hmm, now we will have to reconsider.

The most important thing to remember about your gas is if the mantel has even a small hole in it don't light it. Your Pyrex globe will most likely break in pieces as a jet of super heated air will come out the hole over heating the globe. Learned this 45/50 years ago the easy way, as in snap, crackle, pop. And when you are out in the boonies a new globe is hard to come by.

The mantles also shrink after being burned off, so don't worry that much about even a proper mantle looking too big when still unburnt.
