Hi, I was doing an online search on trailer parts and found this. It's a Trailer Aero Sheild Wind Deflector. I wouldn't buy one new, but it was on a Craigslist ad for $75 slo.craigslist.org/pts/4765017587.htmlHas anyone made anything out of scratch? I don't want to buy one and I can't afford it anyways. Just asking. It wouldn't have to fold down like this one, but just be fixed fairing on the tow vehicle. I have only towed Andy once for 200 miles and I was getting 14 mpg compared to 18 with my pop up with similar weight. I have a 2000 V6 Toyota Minivan. Cheers Rod

Some say they help, some say they don't make any difference, and some say they hurt gas mileage. Me personally I have no idea as I have never owned one. My guess would be the effectiveness would depend on vehicle shape and distance from front of trailer. It could direct the air over and around the trailer, or it could create a vacuum in front of the trailer, or it could cause the air to close in in front of the trailer increasing the drag. Short of have an exact scale model in a horizontal wind tunnel and doing a smoke test I don't think anyone would know because every vehicle shape would respond differently.

I'm hoping the rounded shape of my 62 out does the boxy shape of the 65 with gas mileage. Pardon my language, but it (65) really sucked ... gas.

All the way home I thought, "A cap on the truck might have helped a little bit at least!" Try out the aerodynamics on this rigging....The whole rear wall of the camper was above the box of the truck for 700 miles. When I pulled in the driveway the onboard MPG computer read the highest of the whole trip home... 9.8 . I'm not sure the fairing would have helped much....

And the "Tail gate UP" won for lower MPG. Basically the concept was, the truck bed filled up with higher pressure air, and made the truck more aerodynamic, than with the tailgate down. Go figure?
