Hi,
I am looking to buy a vintage trailer. It's on Craigslist and it doesn't have brakes. From reading in this forum, it looks like you can add the brake assemblies to a trailer axle if the mounting plates are there. If not, then you have to buy an axle, mount it, add the brake assemblies and the drums and then hope it all fits? Help me out here and clarify if I got all this right.
I haven't seen this particular trailer yet.
What would be the cost of adding drums and brake assemblies and then the added change in the connector wires. I assume that if it doesn't have brakes, then it runs off a 4 pin or something else. The connector would have to be replaced with another connector. More labor, more wires, more money.
thanks
Rod

LOL....Hey Rod, are you trying to increase your post count? I answered your other "adding brakes" post above.
You can find all the parts prices on ETrailer.
You still want to use a seven way plug (not a four way plug) "with, or without brakes", because of the battery charge feature. If your adding brakes, it should also have the breakaway safety switch added, and that requires a onboard battery to power the brakes during an emergency disconnect.
And it's doubtful that you can buy a rundown trailer for a few hundred dollars, "spend a grand, or more", and sell it for a couple of thousand, and expect a profit. It's the exact reason that I continue to say, "the most important value consideration to make, is WHAT TRAILER TO RESTORE". You can expect to get a higher percentage of your labor and parts money back on a earlier vintage trailer. Your never going to get $20K back on a late sixties, or seventies trailer, just my opinion.
There's NO SHORTAGE of trailer's waiting for some loving care!

Thanks for helping increase my post count!
Good advice about the 7 pin connector. Didn't know that. Always something to learn. If I didn't have a tiny budget, a lot of this would be so much easier and then I could look for something more expensive on the used market that would be a better candidate for restoration. That's not going to happen anytime soon, unless I sell my pop up, and I am not ready to do that just yet.
be well
