I use RV putty tape behind the eyebrows. Butyl tends to ooze to much. (true butyl that is-the RV shop will tell you RV putty is butyl, but it is a mix)

Are we suppose to be using putty tape when we reinstall the windows? We have both putty and butyl tape but didn't realize there was a difference other than width and thickness. For that reason we used the butyl tape. It has oozed out further once we cleaned the excess off.

Here's a little information about the three more common sealant tapes used on vintage trailers. Putty tape used on the older trailers is actually more of a caulking tape or cord-tape and light grayish in color. It is still available today for use for home plumbing and exterior weatherstripping. Although pliable when applied, it tends to harden some over time and has a weak adhesion compared to other sealant tapes. Butyl tape is very adhesive and maintains it's malleability over the coarse of it's life but tends to ooze in extreme heats. It is a gray tape on brown paper. This works well for sealing when used in cooler climates and/or marine use. Butyl-Putty (RV Putty) is the standard today for putty tape for travel trailers and RVs. It has the flexibility and strong adhesion qualities of the Butyl tape while maintaining body in extreme heat, as well as being trimmable, due to the putty. It is a light gray tape on white crinkled paper.

I'm reading it as the Butyl-Putty (RV Putty) is really the best and I have to say I SO appreciate Nomadic's post putting it all together AND with photos. Somehow it all just clicked.

Nomadic Me. are you saying either one is correct? Yes, all three are usable for sealing your windows. Just keep in mind the different abilities, or lack there of, that each tape has. Butyl Putty (RV putty) is likely the better in your case where you have higher temps. EDIT: Edited to add, RV putty is likely the better in any case for trailer sealant. - Malleable
- Trimmable
- Strong adhesion
- Maintains body in hotter climates
- Long seal life

I use true butyl putty in odd areas: behind backframe gaskets (Hehr windows or cargo compartments) and sometimes door trim. That is if the door trim is not part of a door frame and needs to be sealed against the skin. Butyl must be used sparingly but is very good for a narrow thin seal.
I agree: RV putty tape is the way to seal most flanges. (windows, vents, etc)

I can attest that the butyl tape on paper backing oozes!!! I am constantly (2 yrs later) cleaning drips, and suspect that I will need to retape at some point. It's only on a few areas of my trailer, wish I'd known I would have used much less of it.

So the butyl-putty is the way to go but it seems like that's often just called "putty tape". Is butyl-putty the kind that VTS sells? I think they just call it "putty tape". Mobiltec just says "putty tape" in his videos too but I'm assuming he is using the butyl-putty. So confusing!

We also use butyl-putty (the grey). The brand I use, packages it as "Putty Tape"

We are having a hard time finding putty tape in a store here in Los Angeles. We don't have time to mail order. The RV places around here only have butyl tape. Any ideas?
