So I've ordered my awning rail from Rochford and now am looking at tips for installation. I understand that you should use butyl tape behind the rail then mount it. The same article mentioned using Sikaflex 221 to seal top and sides. Has anyone done this before? how did you seal your rail?
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben, I won't claim to be any expert on the installation, but this is the rail on a 16SC model, which was fairly close to the toaster-shaped Compact. The photo is not real clear but you can get the idea...the J-channel gutter rail ends and just butts up to the C-channel rail, shown above the marker light in this photo. When I took this apart on this model, the C-channel is flat-backed...and it was screwed down with the putty tape backing it to the edge. There were no other signs of any other sealers involved in the original install. Below is the same rail at the rear edge, again above the marker light... The putty tape should squeeze to fill any voids, and should be enough to seal the corner (wall to roof) and the space behind the rails. This particular trailer had loads of caulk that was added in its later life by a PO... None of the caulk was original to it.

The first thing your going to want to do is pre-bend the rail to exactly fit your roof line.
You will not want to be bending it, and working with putty tape at the same time.

Interestingly enough mine never had a canopy. It's J-rail all the way around so I'm thinking of install the new flat C-channel straight against the side of the camper at a slight angle to allow water to drain off.
