Shhhhhhhhhhhh!
There is a great campground (no reservations required or needed) near Northstar Tahoe called Martis Creek Lake Campround. 5 minutes to Truckee, 10 minutes to Northstar, 20 minutes to Kings Beach, Tahoe. No hookups, but absolutely the best primitive campground I have ever visited. Shaded, level paved and easy to back into pads, huge sites that are nicely filled with lava pebbles that keep the dust down to a minimum. Lantern stands and great picnic tables, gravel walks to the very clean and NON smelly facilities (non flush). Well placed water spigots and sumps (for your dishwater), Bear boxes. No showers...but for $9 a night with your annual parks pass...you can mosey over to Lake Tahoe and use the showers that are at the public beaches if you need to. Very quiet, really nice staff.
The lake is a short walk away (5 minutes) it's run by the ACOE so no leashes needed for the pooches once you are out of the campground proper. Lake is great for fishing, kayaking, stand up paddle board or even taking a cool swim. No people even on a weekend. Great bird watching at dusk, dawn. Excellent meadow for stargazing.
Like I said...don't tell anyone.
