I have a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4x4 that pulls my 1957 Pathfinder 16 ft which weighs 2008 lb. I was wondering if there seems to be any consensus on whether it is worth using the tow haul mode on my truck or just leave it in the standard drive position? Not talking about real hilly country just your standard every day driving.

The only time I've used "tow mode" was at the very top of a gravel mountain road with the steepest grade I've ever encountered. Generally on mostly level ground "drive" is OK. If the transmission shifts frequently I put it in drive 3. It can be tricky if you are using cruise control. My experience is to only use cruise control on level roads without a headwind, otherwise it will keep shifting up or down at crazy rpms. Hope this helps.

The only time I used "tow" mode was when the tranny started shifting too often. No cruise when towing.

Tow stops the transmission from going into the top overdrive, I only use it if I feel a lot of the transmission shifting up and down. On gravel or unstable slopes I use the manual mode and select te gear I desire for a given condtion.

Thank you all for the information. It goes along the lines of what I was thinking. So long as the transmission doesn't seem like it is constantly hunting for the right gear just leave it alone.

Shifting = heat, excessive or constant shifting will cause overheating of the transmission fluid which can cause damage if not monitored and corrected (let cool). I have seen transmission fluid boil and get forced out the vent pipe on top. That folks resulted in a toasted tranny.
Don't be afraid, just be aware. Whitney
