Does this seem right - the intersection of Jrail and awning rail forming a butt joint that leaves little room for inserting an awning bead. I went ahead and installed like the original was. It sure seemed like the original rails were still as they were originally put on. Did they never use an awning? I see hooks that were put on at some point, probably for hanging the awning. I may be able to remove some material to create an access point, but the whole thing seems a little odd. You should cut an opening in the top C of the awning rail to accept a vintage style awning. I would consider ordering an awning (Marti's awnings) or at least a sample to assure fit. Another option is cutting a J rail slot rather than the awning rail.
The awning rail usually goes a bit higher than the J rail but it's too late to move it now... Also try to figure out some sort of "stop" to keep the awning in place when in use.

Ok, that sounds like a plan. The aluminum machines fairly easy with a dremel tool. I thought of offsetting while I was putting these on, but covering the overlap and fastening holes was too close.

I faced this problem on my scratch build. I reversed the awning rail, putting the awning opening at the top. The flat part that does the butyl squishing job still is covering the important seam area.
In you case, eating away at the J to make room seems like a reasonable option. Remove enough to make sliding the awning onto it easy, rounding over any edges that can catch the fabric.

The one side looks like the awning "almost" would fit. Maybe use that as the starting point and leave the other as a stop.
