This is the 1954 Jewel that I'm working on. I'm doing a frame off rebuild on it. I just installed the VCT floor and ran into a HUGE problem with the Armstrong Vinyl Composition Tiles. I ordered a box of black and a box of white. I got both. I applied the glue and allowed it to dry to the touch and began installing the checkerboard pattern. To my surprise the white tiles were quite a bit thinner than the black tiles. So much so that you could actually trip on them if you shuffle your feet. This wasn't going to work. And I didn't have time to drive 140 miles to fix the problem through Home Depot. Besides, what could they do? I only had a few more hours to apply the tiles. So luckily I had some extra Beige tiles lying around. I checked the thickness and they were the same as the black. So I went on with the install. I know it looks white in this photo but it's not. It's a very light beige and it will have to do. At least this is MY trailer. I'll deal with Home Depot and possibly Armstrong later.

My experience with Armstrong tiles is also hit and miss. The color varies slightly if they aren't from the same run/batch.
Thanks for the warning on the thickness. Sloppy quality control.

My Armstrong tiles lifted when the sun hit the doorway... Oh dang. What did you do about that?

Wondering about the date codes on the boxes. Are the thinner ones "pandemic tiles", everything worse and you pay much more?

I ended up with a Shasta Deluxe with all the parts and pieces, including the upholstery and flooring.
The Armstrong tiles might have been stored for a couple of years? when I got them. I installed them in cool weather and they seemed to go in well. (self stick) I didn't have any trouble until the sun shone on the doorway at the rally. It was upsetting to say the least. The tiles settled back down that evening but were no longer "stuck" and the seams were wider. Never again...
I trimmed the worst of the flooring and gave the lady some off the price for the floor. It really wasn't bad but it did lift up.

You're probably right, Dan. The tiles seemed sticky but I would never have used them had they not been included with the trailer. Not a fan of black/white floors. Also, I'm not sure what the composition of the tiles were-could have been any Armstrong product.

Looks like you dodged a bullet. In the end it looks great. You got that right. If not for the extra tiles I had lying around the plywood would have been ruined.

I wonder… is the reason one sees so much stark black and white in photos from the 40s and 50s because color film was still to expensive to buy and develop? 🥸
