I'm getting frustrated with stapling my heavy 40 mil skins. Bending staples at about a 30% failure rate when going through two layers. Have hand hammered nails been used historically and successfully? Any recommendations?
By the way, those skins (inexpensive truck roof metal) were far easier to bend around the radius than I had figured. But, thanks to John Palmer, he suggested just banging it around with hammering a board. A 4 inch wide piece of plywood works fine and leaves a nice hand round. I had to make some some relief V-kerf cuts at the radius, about 5 inches on center, about halfway toward the bend.
But please, someone save me from this stapler hell.

My camper was half nails. Larry swears by porter cable coated staples for thicker skins.

Yep. Got some 1-1/4" small diameter stainless steel ringshank nails used for cedar shingles. Pre-drill. Go in like a charm. Problem solved. Thanks (again) folks.
