Question: I am hoping someone knows if I can use my original plate or if I have to display the modern plate that was assigned to the trailer? When I FINALLY jumped the last hoop to get a new title the agent handed me a new plate. I said I have the original and would like to use it. His reply was I can display that but need to have the new plate in the vehicle. Doesn’t sound right to me. Can I have DMV switch the registration to the original plate since it should not be in use by anyone else?

His reply was I can display that but need to have the new plate in the vehicle. Doesn’t sound right to me. Can I have DMV switch the registration to the original plate since it should not be in use by anyone else? When we got our PTI registration, which I hope is how your camper is titled, they were also giving out new PTI plates. We had to write up a statement that we needed our old plates and eventually appealed to Sacramento where the clerks have actual power to change things. Here's how it went, cut a d pasted from another thread. 1. We took our small camp trailer to the DMV office for PTI verification. 2. The helpful clerk, Karen, who has been doing PTI since it was introduced, took the measurements and submitted the Verification paperwork. 3. We submitted a “Statement of Facts” as we wanted to keep our vintage license plates. 4. The fully completed and correct Verification was rejected by Sacramento with no indication why. 5. Calls to the Sacramento registration office affirm that the paperwork as read by me over the phone is correct but they can do nothing as all the paperwork had been returned to me without any notes in my file. 6. The only solution presented is to resubmit, but I have little faith that it will be correctly processed a second submission. 7. I sent a complaint to the Head of the CA DMV and got no response 8. I Tweeted my complaint to the @ca_DMV and finally, after 5 messages back and forth got an email to the registration office where I sent my issue as listed above. 9. I got a very polite call from Jessica, the first competent DMV employee I've ever experienced. She had me resend my paperwork to her. 10. Just got a call from Jessica a week later, all approved, PTI title and registration in the mail back to me right now.

Thanks for the info Dan. My Aljoa is 16 feet which I was told did not qualify for pti. So I guess I will have to have the vintage plate only as a prop and the new one for travel. Unless I want to battle with DMV some more.

Hi Andy,
Through California DMV you can check into using your plate as a YOM Year of Manufacture (YOM) License Plate. It might take a visit or several visits... to get a your plate set up as a YOM plate. I haven't done it, but I don't see why you couldn't. I don't think AAA can do the YOM plate processessing.
See what you can find. Then share back, if you are successful.
