Fabulous trailer! This year when you camp, you’ll have a showpiece to camp in! Wondering what you’re using for cooking. Is that a cooktop across from the door?

Hamlet, I decided not to install a fixed cooktop. The trailer is just under 10 ft. inside so space is limited. I am taking a page from the teardrop trailer community and am planning on using a coleman type of stove on a table outside. If the weather is too bad there is enough space beside the sink to set the stove up. I built a poor mans power roof vent from an idea I found online. I took a couple of salvaged 80mm computer fans, some aluminum bar stock and mounted them into the vent housing. I will wire switches to control the fans to provide ventilation if cooking inside. The fans push about 30 cfm each and only draw about .25 amps. View from under vent lid Inside view. Best part is I only spent about $10.00 for all the pieces needed!

More progress pics, new roof and wall skins installed! Straps holding the rear roof curve down. New roof metal in place and ready for trimming. Strapped down nice and tight and stapled into place. Roof finished with roof vent cut out. No picture but all of the seams and staple divots were sealed with gutter seal. Next up, forming the J trim, and installing windows and doors. Coming together fast now!

A bit more progress over the Easter weekend. New J rails from VTS formed and installed. They came out fairly well. The J rail from VTS is very soft and bent around a template without any heating. Just slow steady pressure bent them around the roof curve templates. On the other hand, they are so soft that just the smallest tap with a hammer on a wood block makes a dent.
Small dents visible from very light taps on a wooden block. Oh well, I guess it still looks better than the original trim that had multiple notches cut with a hack saw and then covered in large smears of silicone!
I had no helper to install the J rail ( wife was at work ) so I used a trick from the auto repair world. I made some alignment pins from bits of wire coat hanger, stuck them in a few screw holes and used them to align the rails until I had a few screws in. A bit closer view of the pin supporting the rail. I applied the putty tape to the rail and then installed onto the trailer. The pins came out with just a light pull after most of the screws were installed.

Just realized that I have never posted any pictures of the Kustom Koach before I took it all apart. Here are a few exterior shots from when I brought it home in October 2020.
Looked not too bad from the outside considering it was over 50 years old. None of the lights worked and most were broken or cracked. The corner trim was hacked up, covered in silicone, but all there. Lots of screw holes in various places where hooks or something had been attached. There were a couple of places that had several holes in about a 6 inch circle. Not sure what was screwed on there! The roof seams had about 3 different layers of different sealers. Probably all why there was extensive rotted framing when I got the skins off.
A piece of rotten rubber floor mat glued and screwed to the front to deflect gravel. It only hid a badly dented and trashed piece of aluminum skin that was not salvageable. The window rock guard is bent on the bottom rail. The framing under and around the front window was so rotted that the only thing holding the window in were the screws through the skins! If some silicone is good, more is better and too much is just right! I think every seam and corner was covered in a layer of silicone. Some places were almost 1/4 inch thick!

ACK. Silicone is the worst. Good luck with that...

The Silicone Blues.....
Hey I just realized how much this camper looks like the Lil Loafer I once had.

I didn't even try to clean the silicone from the trim or skins. The front and rear skins were pretty beat up and the roof had layers of sealant and a few cracks. There were several holes in different places on the side skins and the trim had been off several times and was pretty rough. I decided fairly early into the project that new skins and trim were going to be needed. Mobiltec, I just looked online for images of a Lil Loafer and can see my Kustom Koach is very similar in design. It is also very similar in size too. Mine is only 13 ft. from hitch to rear bumper.

This was my 1961 Lil Loafer and I really wish I had never gotten rid of it. The double front side window you see is not original. The PO had turned this trailer into a ticket booth for a skydiving center and had an awning door that came up instead. So they had cut a bigger hole in the window slot. So I just filled it all in with a double window. Nice view really...
