Hello Gruppe, My name is Gustave. My wife Dominique and I just purchased a 1955 Aljoa travel trailer. We are new to this hobby, but have been interested in it for quite some time. We live in Paso Robles, CA (wine country). We have 10 acres in Templeton, CA, just South of Paso, where we plan to build a home, and a barn. The Aljoa will live there once it's graded, sort of like an office, then subsequently a guest suite. We would also like to take it to some of the vintage camper rallies in CA this summer. Our little camper is not in great shape. Though it was deconstructed and rebuilt by the previous owner, who kindly provided pictures of the process. Their vision was to keep the camper totally original, though that meant reusing some pretty scrappy looking skins. I can totally relate to that vision, and I love patina. But I might be tempted to reskin this little girl at some point. Right now I am doing a lot of research online. I am in the "drinking from a firehose" phase. It is all new to me. I have a 1956 Ford F100 which I have totally rebuilt. We've also built a few custom spec homes. So we have some skills, but I am not taking anything for granted. Looking forward to learning and participating here on the forum. These venues are just unbeatable for exchanging detailed and quality information. You can read a bit about our camper here, at our blog: veniceandvine.com

Welcome Gustave. I had a 56 and it was a really cool trailer! Here's my build: 56aljo.shutterfly.com/ I agree your skins are a little rough and it should be easy enough to replace them. Did the rebuild photos include removing the skins from the trailer?

Hi Gustave and Dominique,
Welcome and congratulations on your new passion.
Nice to see a fellow Californian on the board. I am in So Cal. That area near Paso is very nice.
I read your little history on your Aljoa and enjoyed it. I like the image taken under the Bridge at Gaviota.
The Pismo Beach Rally is near you guys in May. You should come out for the day.
Cheers,
Rod

Thanks for the replies folks. Rod - The Pismo Beach rally we will absolutely attend. We can't wait. It will be our first. vikx - the rebuild included a quasi-removal of the skins, as shown here: Mark - here are some pics of the interior the way the PO had it set up. My wife is now charged with putting her stamp on it. The blue counter tops would not have been our first choice, nor the pink floor. But we can live with it! For now we are stuck towing her behind our 2013 Raptor. But once I get a chance rework the frame and add a hitch, we'll be towing her with this: If anyone is interested in build photos of the F100 then click here: 1956 F100 Build PhotosGustave

The photo of the fridge made my wife laugh. Beer, wine and beer.
Welcome!

Great find. Interior is certainly acceptable IMO. And by the way, beer IS food.

Hey Gustave,
I was looking through your build photos of your Ford. Nice work, btw!
Will you consider mounting a hitch and making the Aljoa and your Ford a pair?
In your Ford build photos, for some reason I was drawn to your receipt for weighing the truck. The address for The weigh center was a recycling center in Van Nuys. I am @ 20 minutes from Van Nuys and I have been curious as to the weight of my trailer.
Did you call ahead of just drive up? Was it only $10?
Thanks,
Rod

Did you call ahead of just drive up? Was it only $10?Boy Rod, you are really dredging my memory banks! I weighed the F100 in 2009 to get it registered, since it came from out of state. It was cheap and easy at that time. I cannot remember what type of place it was, some type of recycling center I think. I just showed up, no reservation, though I had called them beforehand just to ensure they could do it for me. I drove up onto the scale, got the weight, made a U-turn and paid at the booth and drove on out. I do plan to modify the '56 F100 to tow the Aljoa. The truck has a "Cup Car" style suspension and the custom frame just was not set up for towing. I have a plan to build my own frame from scratch and that would include a provision to mount a hitch to it. Gustave
