I’m preparing to finish the inside of my trailer and as some new birch panels have been added I have come to the conclusion that my best bet to endure a consistent finish when I’m done is to strip the existing finish off. My trailer is one of the ones where they added a “milky” product into the shellac or varnish and it’s impossible to match. As this is a long term project where I have done everything as correctly as possible I’ve decided that it’s worth the effort of stripping it as I do not want any regrets when finished.
Have any of you done any stripping of the finish on the interior? What product do you recommend? I know that in theory you can use alcohol on shellac but I have no idea if it’s shellac on there, plus it is the weird milky stuff mixed in. So I need something that will eat through everything. I have a proper respirator for safety with the fumes.

@danrodes did you have to sharpen the scraper when you bought it or were you able to use it as is?

My banco scraper came sharp. It did a good job getting a lot of the polyurethane off but the wood still needed a sanding.
I've never used chemicals on the inside panels but I'd try something less toxic than Jasco. Maybe this...

They come sharp and are not that tricky to resharpen. Watch a video or two, you simply square the edge with a file, stone or sandpaper, then use a hard metal tool like an old drill bit or nail set to create a burr that does the cutting. I've also used citristrip around the house and recommend covering with plastic to keep it wet and active for longer @danrodes did you have to sharpen the scraper when you bought it or were you able to use it as is?

Thanks @danrodes and nccamper for the info. I’m not sure if we have that brand of stripper here in Canada but I’ll check. Canada is weird... you can walk into a drugstore and get codene without a prescription but we have all sorts of laws to protect the trees! So I’ll buy a couple of those flexible scrapers and get started. I did watch a sharpening video and my response was hmmm... ok order two lol but I may be able to get one of the guys at my Windsor plywood specialty wood store who knows how to sharpen them. Just getting back from a cruise... apparently my hometown Winnipeg Canada hit a record low of -52 degrees celsius while I was away. That’s -61 degrees for you in the USA. Sure makes me glad I have an indoor warehouse to work in!
