Hi, I bought modern brakes and hubs to replace the ones on my '67 Aristocrat LoLiner, and all went well until I tried to install the hubs. The original brake design required more space between the spindle end and the brake flange. In this photo you can see how much of the square axle extends through the flange. The modern brakes need less distance between the flange and spindle end. So my question is how do you put new brakes on an old axle? Can the flange be cut off and moved, or can I use some kind of spacers or something?

Spacer will be fine if you make it so that it holds everything in line and doesn't rotate when brakes are applied. If you have it moved and rewelded it has to be positioned exactly where it needs to be plus straight and square.

I guess I could have a machine shop make me some solid steel spacers like this, but it might be a bit pricey with the square hole in the middle.. Do you think this is the best approach? spacer by fiddlerail, on Flickr

You could just put a round hole in the center, it doesn't need to be square. That would cut down the cost. But any machine shop work is very expensive. Unless you can find a small shop that that does rough work, you will probably be shocked at the cost.
It would probably be cheaper to take it a fab shop and have the cut off the old one and weld on new ones.

I'd get quotes from shops, then weigh it against the cost of a completely new axle. You might be surprised.

Betting a new axle is cheaper.
