I'm in Texas and I've done two bonded titles in the past, one on a car and one on a camper so I was prepared for the process. The hardest part about the process is that the DMV themselves aren't very familiar with the process so sometimes the process isn't consistent for what you need and what you don't need (Weight cert and safety inspection are the two items that are sometimes requested and other times not) so I decided to take a new approach, get everything possible so there is no frustration with getting sent away for that one extra piece of paper. I accomplished everything in only two days and a total of $500 including the gas for all the driving around... Was a very proud feeling to navigate all the bureaucracy and win in the end.
We have an 888 number to call BEFORE buying to be sure it is not stolen and the VIN is "clean" with no record of ownership listed... then...
Sheriff's Dept VIN verification $40
Regular safety inspection $7
Weigh scale certificate $8 Dept of transportation "permission slip" $15 Surety Bond $150 Title only application (no registration since it will be for sale) $250
I have another appointment with the sheriff to do my '63 Shasta next week, then the '62 Scotty sometime after that and then I'm done with bonded titles. It's not a horrible process as long as you know what you are getting into.

We have that option here in Illinois as well. Thanks for the post- good to know it’s not so very different from the regular process.
