Hello everyone! I’m hoping someone can help me determine the year of the beautiful Shasta Compact I just got. A previous owner titled it back in 2008 as a “handmade trailer” so the exact year is unknown. From what I can research it is a 63’. Basing this off of the vin, which puts its manufacture plant in Pennsylvania. This plant did not open until 1963. There is the original floor plan layout pinned up in the closet and it does not reflect the “luxury lounge area” in the rear that was introduced in 64’. Does all this sound like my detective work is accurate that it is a 63’? I have the vin and a pic of the floor plan if anyone wants to assist if those will help. Looking forward to being a part of the Vintage Trailer life and this forum! Thanks in advance, ShastaSteve

Welcome to the mania. Look forward to seeing what you have. With regard to the title, was it titled with the VIN numbers that are stamped on the tongue? If you are working with the original numbers, Ross can help narrow down the year. It sounds like you have done most of the sleuthing already. I'm sure he would love to add the VIN to his collected database of numbers. Also, if the original iron sink is still in it, there should be a date stamped on the bottom. That can help narrow it down also, since it could not have been built before that date.

Congrats on your acquisition! I hate to be picky with a new member and fellow Compact owner, but we need pictures. Ok, want pictures. 😁

insert code here Whoa everyone is amazing here!!! I have all the goodies you are requesting to assist me! VIN: DS18499PA1722. So the Pennsylvania plant I know and as I research it narrows to a 63’ every angle I search. The vin stamped on the frame isn’t reflected the title because one of the owners bonded it in 08’ as a handmade trailer. I am in the headache works of fixing it now. But the more factual points I can make the better! ![]() Why am I not able to figure out how to post pics?? I would love to share!

Hey shastasteveBased on the vin, your Shasta Compact was produced in 1963 (probably mid year), in Northridge, California. Hope this will help get your Shasta on the right track to fixing the title.

Thanks Ross! How did you dig up the California aspect of production? Everything I found vin based puts it at the Pennsylvania plant. Just clarifying so I can put as much accuracy into my title paperwork as possible. Thanks! Steve

Steve,
Shastas produced in the Leola Pennsylvania plant had VIN numbers that began with the letter "P" followed by 4 or 5 digits. The P prefix denoted the Pennsylvania plant; "V" denoted the Indiana plant; "S" denoted South Carolina; "T" denoted the Texas plant. There were 2 plants in California if I remember correctly, and the sequence that yours contains would fall in line with the VINs from the Northridge plant.

Ten nailed it! The 2 California plants usually used a 2 letter prefix series of the digits.
The Van Nuys plant: C, CA
The Northridge plant: D, D1S, D2S, D3S, D4S, D5S, DS, ES, FS (however in 1964, the FS vin's were being produced in Simi, California), HS and HT
This is to the best of my knowledge, which is based on the info that I have collected from Shasta owners, vin's and the green manufacture's badge/plate.
