So we're going camping this aftermoon, and i just discovered our hand pump isn't working. If you start pumping it it initially moves back and forth freely, but then it starts to "spring" back in one direction, all the while not pumping any water. Any quick fix for this, we're headed out in a few hours and would like to have a working faucet. And by the way, the line is clear all the way to the tank, i can blow in the end of the faucet and hear bubbling in the tank

Have you tried priming the line by filling it with water? it may be the hand pump is not self-priming...

If you prime it from the oitlet, it will spit the water out, if you try to sibmerge the inlet it does as i described above. I dont see any way to get it apart either. I tried to unscrew the bottom, i put a lot of force on it and it didnt budge. i124.photobucket.com/albums/p29/mk-Zero/Trailer/20180303_113958_zps47plyodb.jpg

I don't know of any quick fix for it. I would probably stop at the store and purchase three or four big 2-1/2 gallon jugs of the bottled water.

Anyone know how to get this one apart? I'd like to fix it before our next outing at least then. Thanks for your help and suggestions.

If I had to guess, I would think the cast part unscrews from inside the sleeve, and the sleeve stays in place up into the housing. I would also think it is in there tight from years of corrosion, etc, and it may take some heat to take it apart. That puts it at risk of damaging the internal parts with the heat. This type of pump is still available to purchase new, and may in the long run be easier and more economical than finding repair parts...but I haven't shopped for the parts before either. www.vintagecampers.com/viewpart.php?partID=261www.vintagetrailersupply.com/Rocker-Hand-Pump-p/vts-699.htm

A very cool vintage pump! They can be rebuilt; many have leather gaskets that dry out with age.
Try taking the brass fittings apart. It looks like one piece has a nut.

I dont mean to Hijack this thread, but while were on the topic oh hand pumps. My new one in the compact is leaking, it seems to be leaking from the pump handle.. it will leak a little while pumping then I walk away and next time I come back there is way more water. Has anyone had this happen?? IMG_1652 by Mel L, on Flickr

I recently fixed my pump also.
Put it in a vise and use a heat gun at the brass fitting that goes into the pump body. They use some type of putty sealant back in the day and it's like cement! I used a large pipe wrench and the heat gun.
Once separated you can pull the pump apart i.e. Leather gasket. You'll probably find a retaining screw had backed out that holds the pump to the handle. You'll need to stand on your head to reinstall (JK) but is doable. Good luck.
I'd post pix and video but....

Mel, google Rocket Hand Pump and repair kits. It sounds as if your pump may have been previously damaged. Frozen? Is your pump brand new/

Unless it had water in it and froze, it shouldn't be leaking... You might be able to tighten a nut or replace the O ring.

I'm looking at that same one as a replacement for mine, it got pretty bad/mixed reviews on Amazon though, mostly for leaking, or stopping working after a few uses. I'd hate to have it go out in the middle of a camping trip.
I tried unsuccessfully to fix mine. The pump piston itself is in great shape and seems to work well, but the check valve is not working. I've tried lubricating with various fluids, cleaning it with different things... no luck. And the valve is sealed in the bottom of the tube, it appears to be braised together. In light of the apparently spotty quality of the replacements that are available, I may just drill out and remove the existing check valve and put one in-line in the hose leading up to the pump. I don't see any reason it wouldn't work.
