I am getting ready to order my awning fabric, as I have the use of a commercial sewing machine for a few months. I would like to make an awning for the front and rear windows as well as the standard side awning. I am looking for a little info. -How do you attach the rockguard awning cover? Is it tied to the rockgard, or do I need to install an awning channel? -Same question for the rear awning, do I need to add awning channel, and does anyone have a photo of the frame I need to build to have it attach back there. My rear window does not open, but I still want an awning for there. I think I remember mobiltec showing a rear awning during a tour of a trailer rally, but can't remember which video that was. Thanks Lady W

So far, I have found this illustration online. It's for a house, but maybe the same principle. I am thinking I could make it out of chrome boat awning parts which I can buy wholesale.

This looks easy enough to build, and I'm all for the use of marine/boat supplies. I think an awning over a non-opening window is great because of (duh) the sun.
Seems like if you don't want to drop it down as a cover as well (like the fiberglass or tin old ones) adding an awning rail and just making one like you show above would be awesome and easy to do.

I am wondering if your friend would be willing to take some close up photos of the construction when he has time mobiltec? Doesn't hurt to ask.. lol

mobiltec I think I can wing it from the video. I can show it to my supplier at the upholstery supply shop and see what they can come up with. They carry marine fittings. I am assuming he used stainless snap screws on the top of the window. I have those in my upholstery supplies. I have even considered using the snaps around the front window and creating a clear vinyl rain cover to keep the rain from squeezing through the Jalhousy window. I just don't know how they will look. I will try them once I get to the point of closing off the trailer.

Yes, but I don't know if I can do that. Maybe, but I'm also going to look at the boat fittings. Ill report back once I design it.

You could use regular awning rail above the window or rock guard trim with the awning C slot. Do some research before deciding on what you need.

Do your homework before you start trying to screw anything to the trailer. Snaps, channel, or anything that attaches should be attached into framing rather than screwed into the skin only. A good wind could take it out and leave scars in the siding.

A good wind could take it out and leave scars in the siding. I am thinking that I would simply be substituting the regular screws along the top of the metal window frame with snap base screws. So I don't think that will be a problem, although it is a very good point you bring up. I have my skin off so no problem to beef things up, but a friend of mine is asking me to help her add an awning, and she has no awning rail. I have already been wondering how we are going to find a solid backing for that. I am going to assume, that I may have to drop down to the bottom edge of the top piece of skin where it staples on? I don't really know how else I can do it.

If you have access to an infrared thermal imager, you'll find all your wood, or any other solid framing, relatively easily. They are very common, and most electricians own them today. I'm sure you can rent one as well. That may be the last resort to other common methods, but by far, the most effective.

Or if you took lots of photos of your work along the way then you have a record and can just go take a peek. I do that all the time. I'm constantly referring back to my progress photos and notes. Especially near the end of the build.

LadyW, you're talking about a friend's trailer? To add awning rail, you remove the J rail. The awning rail goes in place of the J rail. If your friend's trailer has not been rebuilt, the backer wood may not hold the screws...
I used my multimaster to cut the old J rail AFTER the awning rail was in place. You will need a helper to hold the rail very securely if you use this method. If the J rail is off the trailer, you can cut it with a hack saw.
Email me for pix.
For your trailer, add backers everywhere you will need them. For eyebrows, cabinet add ons, light fixtures, etc. Then you can send me pix and I'll critique. Snicker.
