This was about the funniest thing, and yet at the same time one of the the saddest things I have ever witnessed when it comes to backing into a space. Now it wasn't a trailer, it was a big Class A motor home. The couple looked to be in their late 60s or early 70s. The location was Panamint Springs Resort in Panamint Valley, California near Death Valley. It was about 10am and the weather was perfect....
I was there for 4 days camped out in one of my tents and one of my long time exploring friends worked at the resort doing maintenance. It was time for a break so he came over to my camp site for a cup of coffee and as we sipped and talked we noticed this big Class A coming in. We watched as the driver got out of the motor home and looked over the site. They talked back and forth for a few minutes while pointing at the tree limbs hanging down over the camp site. They wanted to be right next to the rest rooms for some reason and that space is the smallest space in the camp ground with hook ups.
Once they were finished discussing the maneuvering problems and came to an agreement on how to go about it, the husband climbed into the MH while the wife moved to the rear of the vehicle. He began backing and right away she starts screaming at the top of her lungs "THAT's NOT RIGHT! YOU'RE DOING IT ALL WRONG! STOP! STOP! STOP YOU IDIOT!"....
We had good laugh at their expense and continued to watch. I poured us each another cup of coffee...
He got out and they pointed and waved their arms and talked a little more and then he got back into the vehicle. She started to wave him back and just about the time we thought he was in as far as he could safely go, the MH made one more lunge and took out a tree branch with his AC unit. That was going to cost because it broke the plastic housing and half of it was now hung up in the broken tree limb.
She yelled at him again to stop but the damage was already done. He got out and went to the rear and started screaming at her that she wasn't telling him what to do properly. She screamed back that he wasn't listening and finally after about 2 minutes of non stop arguing and name calling, he said, "If you are so smart why don't you do it!"... She agreed and began walking towards the front of the MH.
She looked back over her shoulder at her husband, gave an evil stare and climbed in and shut the door. Just as the husband began to wave her back, she threw it in gear and took off in a forward direction, turned right into the camp road and started to accelerate away from the site. He was standing there in awe and then began to chase down his wife. She sped up and got to the entrance of the camping area. He almost caught up with her when she turned left out of the camp and took off leaving her husband behind shaking his fist and yelling obscenities....
The man was in denial and stood there screaming for her to come back as she disappeared down the road. Finally, once he was out of breath he walked across the street to the main office and went inside.
There is no bus or taxi service out there in the middle of no where so he hung around in the office asking, pleading for a ride to a town. Any town, so that he could figure out how to get home. He finally got a ride out of there the next day and that was the last we ever saw of the two or their motor home.......
There are proper ways to signal each other and if you learn those signals and get comfortable with signaling your partner you could save your marriage or relationship. Practicing at home is much better than learning things the hard way out on the road. You should practice all your emergency procedures as well. Changing a flat, dealing with wiring problems and a multitude of other little chores that will keep you safe on the road should all be thought about in advance and not when you are out there trying to have fun. A little preparation goes a long way.
Yes I need to do a video. Coming soon to a computer near you.
