Hi Bob, Looking forward to seeing more. If I can second NCcamper's suggestion earlier in this thread. Photobucket is really hard to work with IMHO. The clustering of ads that drench the pages slows down computers and makes navigation between photos near impossible for anyone on the outside. 3rd party hosting isn't possible unless you run an extension. I have many of my original photos on my Westerner there. I dread going into viewing it. I really recommend opening up an album elsewhere, especially since you are beginning your restoration. It's easier to have all photos in one place. Flickr is popular here. I use Flickr. Just my 2 cents. Cheers, Rod

Making decent progress on the 55'. I finally pulled the ceiling / Vent panel this weekend.
So here's my question: this trailer has 7 large windows and a door, why do we need a vent since they are so prone to leak?
I went ahead and framed for a vent just in case someone wants to install later.
Thoughts?
Bob

Hi and welcome. While the roof issue will appeal to those who actually know what’s going on (I am not that person at this point) I am intrigued by the concrete removal issue. nccamper is hilarious - "We really like photos here. Especially of rot." It’s comments like this that make my day.
As for the vent, I plan to replace my old one with a Fantasic Fan (they seem to have a bit of a cult following here). Being able to turn on a fan when there’s no draft seems like a good thing to have. I’m not equipped with AC or heat but I’m not going that route at this point. However, I want to make sure I have air flow. Just my 2 pennies but I think a vent is worth it.

Hi Jolene,
I believe the Fantastic Fan idea is a good choice. I have a fan in my newer camper that we use all the time. I'm on the fence about converting a vent to a fan for my Catalina build. Maybe one of those comfort things that does make sense even for vintage trailers. Others have a lot more experience on this forum with what is period appropriate and what is not. Also, I believe Mobiltec created a video on how to install one, so you might want to check that out.

Just be aware that these fans make quite a bit of noise. In a smaller trailer like the Loafer it may be too much noise and because that trailer is so small it really doesn't take long to cool off by just opening a window and the top vent. These fans are about as noisy as an AC unit. Something to think about.

10-4 mobiltec and thanks. We are going camping this weekend "as-is" - I figure the best way to really know what is needed and not needed, and "good for now", really needs to change, etc. is to get out there. I'm going from tent and van camping to this, so unless the sucker explodes or we get torrential rain that exposes some hidden leaks that haven't been seen in 40 years (it was in Idaho, I'd be surprised if there were leak issues I missed), we can enjoy the time and get to know the camper.

Absolutely frame for the vent and add 12 volt wiring as well! It's easy to do and you can always add a Fantastic Fan later. Also shim the framing a little higher than the surrounding frame, I go 3/4" when possible. Taper the shim so that it doesn't crease the metal.
The wires should be at the 10 o'clock position as you face the front of the trailer (12 would be dead center toward the front. Or the front corner about 2" back on the left side. I hope this makes sense. I cut about an inch hole all the way thru the vent framing so there's a place to tuck the wires into.

Maybe I missed the highlighted red information at some earlier posting in another thread(s), but it's with me now. Just placed it in the trailer file. Excellent information. Cheers, Rod

Thanks Rod. Vicx cut some kitchen cabinet 3/4 plywood (the good stuff) on the table saw to make the shims. He tilted the blade over as far as it would go, so the taper is very thin at the end. Perfect for me. They are about 4" wide; I think 5" would be better but the saw only cuts so much at a slant. I glue and tack the shims. ALSO: be SURE that the vent framing is a hair larger than 14". You will need at least 1/8 all the way around to prevent sticking when installing the vent. Wonder how I know this?

Few pix of our 55. Just trying to get some posted, flicker. Making good progress. Decided to go with the Fantastic Fan after all. Just finished new 12v and 120v wiring, 14/2 Romex. Thanks Larry! New junction box installed in closet, 2, 15 amp breakers. 12v JB will be installed under dinette seat. New 13 Gallon freshwater tank on order. Have one side insulated, and will be closing up the front end with new birch panel this week. New dining seat boxes roughed out for install after panel laid up. flic.kr/p/K6qsPCwww.flickr.com/gp/158814164@N07/916756www.flickr.com/gp/158814164@N07/gzsg2Uflic.kr/p/27ehzbP
