I would not say never buy a trailer with only a bill of sale but EDUCATE yourself on what is required in the state in which you live. There are lots of trailers out there that you are only going to get with a bill of sale and I never shy away from them, although I would prefer to have a transferable reg. Every state is different. Some require next to nothing and others require you to jump through hoops of fire. In NY, if you only have a bill of sale a buyer can get the trailer registered if the seller fills out a few forms: Statement of transaction and Statement of ownership for non-titled vehicles. There is also a certification of sale or transfer of 1972 or older vehicles (NY did not title them prior to this). You will need a bill of sale that includes description and vin number. The forms aren't complicated. Just need to fill out what it is you are selling/buying and then both buyer and seller have to sign them. Buyer has to pay the lovely taxes on the selling price and then about $28 to register it. It's really pretty easy here and NY isn't real easy on anything! I concur with "Agent 99". We bought a 1964 Shasta with Bill of Sale only in New York. We live in California but have a second home there. I was worried about the "Bill of Sale" only so I called the local DMV in upstate New York to ask questions. It turns out the gal that I talked to knew the guy who was selling the trailer but that's another story. So "Jen" at the DMV was really nice and cute about it… "OH Honey, so you found a semi abandoned trailer up in the woods and you want to register it?… Sure we see that all the time, what with hunting shacks and all up in the backwoods. The DMV will gladly take your money." … We made sure we had all of the DMV paperwork on hand when we went to meet the seller. Making sure we filled out all of the forms correctly. (Double check yourself for sure) and Yes it was pretty easy at the NY DMV. It's really important to know your VIN # when you get there. We had actual photos of the vin # and of the trailer. They asked if they could have a few of the photos to submit with the paperwork, (since I could get more copies I of course said yes.) We paid about $56.00, on a $500.00 camper. As I recall they handed up a plate right then and there. They didn't even question that they were sending the final paperwork California, but we do have ID's that show we have property in both states. The DMV in California was a bit of a different story… I'll fill you in on that story another time. After traveling across country, following Route 66 "wheels on the ground" with our new/old camper…. What a Fun trip! A bit nerve racking at times… but "Zippidy Do Da" bounced along very nicely for those 3,000+ miles. We had brand new correct trailer tires. Now we are doing a few basic things here on this side of the USA… but basically leaving it intact as the "barn find" that it is. (Thanks Mobiltec for the tips on how to clean and restore the amber shellac inside, Fantastic!) Conclusion of this story - 16 foot Shasta camper now registered legally in CA with Pink Slip and 1964 Black Vintage plates. We're CALIFORNIA GOLDEN!

Zip,,, yep it can always be done some how or another as long as it doesn't turn up stolen. It's a matter of whether you want to go through what it takes. Jump through the hoops and sometimes spend as much as $500 to get it right. Even more if it needs an inspection for brake and lamp. So it's not impossible. Just sometimes it can be a big pain in the rear bumper. Congrats on your success and glad my videos helped.

You can get a title from the State of Maine for $99.00 as I recall. You get it thru a private agency and it takes about 3 weeks. Their information is on line. Download their bill of sale and power of attorney and mail them together with payment. It's a snap, and you can then re title in your state. azshastanut, What is the name of the agency, I just bought a 1974 Holiday Rambler, 21 foot. The guy I am buying it from bought it from an estate, and the woman couldn't find the title. So far, I have struck out with trying to find the VIN. I have looked all over the tongue, only good thing about the whole thing is that the tongue is now ready to be primered and painted. SMIRK But I heard from another guy, that up on the plate directly behind the coupler, where the jack stand is welded to, they sometimes engraved the VIN there. But if I can get a title by the route your suggesting, it would make life much easier. Thank you for your time.

I resurrected an old grain truck from a farm field last winter that had no title or record at the DMV. With a bill of sale, statement of facts, and a picture of all 4 sides, I was able to get plates and registration. New MN title arrived 3 weeks later. I hope things go that smooth with the Bee! Please tell me where the DMV is at that you went to, all I have is the Bill of Sale. I am down by Red Wing, MN.

What state? Do you need a notary there? I once transferred a title to a car that was registered to someone in jail. His son signed the title . This was in MN, no notary needed.

It they can provide a copy of the death cert and also proof of being the administrator of the estate and sign it that normally will take care of it. But to be safe I would call the DMV to make sure that is all they need.

Hi Friends,
I agree with Tom. Having been on the other side of this situation, that's what we did. This is how we registered one of my trailers.
My MIL passed away and we couldn't find any paperwork. My wife was the administrator of the estate. She had to bring the death certificate and the certificate from the courts that showed she was the administrator of the estate. She then filled out a form declaring that all this was true. I don't remember if we had it notarized.
Being a member of AAA can be very helpful with a situation like this.
Rod
You will have to be able to get back to the daughter to help with paper work.

Sure wish I would have read this before... outstanding info and could have saved Sharon and I lots of tears and $
So I purchased our 1969-70 Shasta Compact trailer and was told that the current owner never registered it nor titled it. Trailers under 2000lbs do not need to be titled in Floirida and the man goes to church with us. So fine we bust butt to get it ready for the road and invest $$$$ (new bearings, Tires, redone Elec. and plumbing and of course woodrot replacement and treatment etc.) so I go to Fla. DMV and I am told that indeed the trailer had been titled way back in 1992 and that he last time it was registered was 2010. AND they would not tell me anything else to help resolve it.
Soooooooo I tried to trace the owners and got back 3 owners ALL have which have been "Title Jumpers" which they do to avoid paying tax and gov. knowing them (lots of anti gov. sentiment here in the Panhandle) and the last owner 2 owners ago said that she had heard the man she purchased it from had passed.
Now it looks like I am having to spend $300-400 to get a Declaratory Judgement from a local Judge delaring me the owner and directing the DMV to issue a title and plate. I think I have found the right form so I am gonna DIY it and I am then going to sue my seller in small claims for that fee.
I would appreciate your thoughts and any advice

You've given us advice! NEVER buy a trailer without a title; it's just common sense.
Jumping titles is illegal in all 50 states. I've done it myself before I knew about the law. It can cause all sorts of problems even with the title because in my State, a bill of sale is required. If you don't have access to the orig. owner, no bill of sale, unless you already have one.
I wish you luck in getting the title and hope it goes quickly and easily. As far as a small claims suit, check carefully how much it will cost YOU before going that way...

In the state of Florida any trailer that you can sleep in must be titled. Period. When the Florida DMV website says that trailers under 2000 pounds do not need to be titled they’re talking about “utility trailers“ not travel trailers. They are making a change to be clearer so dats good. I filed with the court... went and had a hearing before the judge... judge found in my favor... soooooo... I got my title, registration and plates today! Hooray 😃 See ya out there
