Spent a few hours today at the shop and managed to get the street side framing finished. This was the easy side. I'm pretty happy with the results. The curb side is going to be much harder. There is rot all along the bottom especially under the door and baggage door. The door frame is a little rotten and a bit out of square. I'll need to rebuild most of the door frame to get the door to open and close properly again. Then there is a cracked stud and a few other little issues to resolve on the curb side also. My goal is have the curbside done this weekend but that's aiming high.

I replaced all the rotten and broken framing on the curbside. Framing goes pretty quick. Both sides are pretty much done. Heres a photo from around the baggage door area. I'm moving from the walls to the floor. I'm planning to at least replace from the front of trailer to the front of wheel wells. I will probably just do the whole floor including the joists but I'll know for sure when I start pulling the plywood and can get a look. There wasn't any framing backing portions of the dinette so I need to go back and add some supporting framing to the side walls to support the seats with more than just 1/8 ply.

Yeah mobiltec I wish I had invented it too. It isn't cheap for drill bit a hunk of plastic and a set of vice grips but man it's good at it's job. Do you use the kreg screws or do you use a standard screw. The kreg screws are really nice but kinda pricey. A lot has changed since the last post. I started digging into some rotten plywood floor near the door. I found that the joists underneath were pretty good with exception of the one just under the door BUT when I got a good look at the frame I realized it was bent like someone overloaded the tongue and there was a hairline crack in one of the frame/wall supports. It was pretty subtle damage that I didn't notice when I bought it so I tried to convince myself not to worry about It but I couldn't live with it. I disassembled the trailer down to the frame. I have a friend who is a welder that thinks he can straighten and fix it. I hope he is right. Otherwise I might pour a concrete foundation in the backyard and rebuild the cabin/box on it instead of the trailer;-). Anyway this project has totally snowballed out of control. I think I'll name the whats left my little trailer Snowball. You can't really see the bent frame in the picture but trust me it's bent. I also relized that my walls are 3/16 not 1/8 birch. I'm glad I noticed that before I shipped a bunch of 1/8 all the way up here.

Hope is restored! I took the frame to a welder friends house and he was able get the frame PERFECTLY straight. He Normally does boat fabrication and oil gas pipeline welding with some pretty high tech equipment but in his backyard shop he used a torch some firewood rounds and a bachoe to straighten the frame. Basically we lifted the trailer up on the firewwod rounds heated the areas of the frame where we wanted to straighten it and then pushed on the frame with backhoe. After he had the frame straight he boxed the c channel frame in with some heavy plate steel. Just a little boxing at the weak point really stiffened the frame. He also weled up the cracked outriggers which support the walls. It sounds pretty primitive but the frame is perfect now and much stiffer than before with very minimal weight gain. I had my doubts when I saw his plan come together but he did a great job. Here's a shot of a perfectly straight frame. I didn't get a chance to snap a pick when he was pushing with the backhoe but you can see the it in the background. Here he is boxing in the c channel frame. This is a mod I found out about when building off road jeeps. It really stiffens and strengthens the frame without a ton of added weight.

Looking good coldham. Every great restoration starts off with small things to do, and turns into an all out restoration. When it's done, you will know every last bolt and wire is correct. I never needed a back hoe in any restores... You took it to a new level!

Dang I see people like you and Soup working in the snow and it makes me feel like a big, well you know... LOL...
Coldham I use regular screws of the same sizes or what ever is needed for the job. Yes the Kreg screws are too expensive. Ace hardware sells boxes of 100 of every kind of screw and fastener one could ever think of. The average price is $4 to $5 per box.

Larry don't think of it as snow we are working in, just think of it as cold white sand that melts. I say as I watch it getting deeper on the Shasta's roof by the minute. We have about 3" now and expecting 8" by evening. This will give me a chance to test the new 3" crowned rafters I installed a few weeks ago. They do a fantastic job of shedding water now we will see how they handle a snow load.

BRRRR!! Tallulah Belle is thanking us for rescuing her. If she were at her PO home she would be -27 this morning. Seriously, how do y'all function in the cold?

Ahhh The old heat and beat technique...well with a back hoe added!! LOVE THAT!!! Looks like something I would do. One time I was straightening a door/windshield post on a 74 dart with the cable from the 10klb winch on my car hauler deck running through the wing window on the open front door hooking into a hole on the pillar. Pulled so hard it lifted the other side of the car tires off the ground but got the pillar straight! Without even cracking the windshield!!!! Also love your wood framing techniques too. It almost looks like how I would do!! LOL I love this camper and the work your doing. Hey mobiltec, We just had snowflakes falling outside that looked the size of tea cup saucers! Loki was freeking out. He's never seen snow before and 1 flake would take his whole face out at once. LOL He was getting PO'd and running around like crazy.
