I have a question. Is all "butyl" tape the same as long as it says butyl? I noticed the mechanical contractor on the job I'm on uses butyl tape on his ac duct flanges. He buys it by the ton and said he could hook me up but I want to make sure it's safe. I'll see if I can get a pic of the box later. They are all similar, with butyl being the primary component, but not all the same. Some are formulated for sealing metal to metal, some metal to glass, etc. with different manufacturers having different formulations. If you want to use butyl I'd say you will likely be safe using this contractors product. I am using a very sticky 3/16" butyl tape I bought at my local RV center for my fantastic fan and the thin tacky tape as described earlier. The windows and j-rail are putty taped.

I just bought 5 rolls of 1/16 x 1/2 x 50ft for 36.99 off ebay an hour ago. Single roll is like 10 bucks with free ship. It's 12-15 bucks for one roll on amazon. One consideration with ebay is that it can be a crap shoot. The manufacturer states that this product has an 18 month shelf life. An ebay sellers product could be several years old, there is no way to tell. On the other hand, just because the manufacturer states an 18 month shelf life does not necessarily mean that the product can no longer be used for our purposes. The only way to be certain is to buy from a known source. Right. I always check the feedback on ebay sellers before I buy. All the buyers of the butyl from this seller here all seem happy. Butyl, as long as it's stored right will last a long time on the shelf. Butyl is always sticky whereas Putty tape dries out and should be replaced every 10 years. I did a test on removing the alum roof/wall edge cap on mine. It appears a small bead of butyl caulk was used. It's still sticky and I had to heat " used low flame propane torch" to lift with a putty knife. The camper had developed a couple small leaks over its 71 years, Most likely by flex causing the small bead to separate. Using 1/16" 1/2" butyl should keep it from leaking for the next 100 yrs, lol.

Just thought I would put it out there that I just ordered and received Tacky Tape from Sunshine Supply. I spoke with Craig and there were no distributors in our area (not surprising). He suggested that I contact the folks at Sunshine Supply 800-400-7442 and tell them what I am looking for.
They had a fresh shipment come in the following day and I was able to order over the phone. $4.75 /25'roll of fresh 1" X 1/8" #SM5227 Tacky Tape
Now just waiting on the metal from Hemet Valley RV which should show up sometime soon
Thanks for doing the legwork RinTin!
