I've been trying to get my Boles Aero registered in Calif. I've been to the dmv 2 times. The first time 4-4 2015. They said there are no records for the trailer. I needed to get it inspected which I did. I went to dmv last week to try again now they say I need to get the CHP to inspect it. My question is What are they looking for. The trailer has a model number on it and the frame has a number. If there not in the system what are they looking for. I'm rebuilding the trailer for myself. The only parts that won't be replaced are the frame and metal. Any advise someone in California can give would be appreciated. Would it be better to replace the frame and call it a kit. Its 17 feet long. Thanks Gary.

California DMV can be a pain. I don't know all the rules, but maybe a member from Cali will chime in. mobiltec?

If it's not in the system then they are only looking for a VIN inspection by an authority. If you have AAA you can do it through them. IF not you can go to a private DMV registration place to have that done. Actually they can register it for you also for a small fee. Then you never have to see the DMV again.
People at the DMV are not trained well at all. They get two weeks of training before they are turned loose on the general public. Old trailers are not part of the training. That usually happens with OJT. Of course the CHP can inspect it for the VIN also. If you can find one. They hide really well.

Thanks the trailer vin is stamped on the tongue. The model number and serial number are on the side of the trailer.Z19C243. I found a registration from 1970 in the trailer they match. The registration shows the model and serial number of the trailer. The stamp on the trailer frame says zieman chassis no Z 65169. WHITIER CALIF. I can see no correlation between the 2. Do the need both numbers ?

Hi Gary,
I am in California. I got my Rod and Reel registered in California with no information in the system. I was sent to DMV for a VIN check. I thought they wanted to check to see if all the lights and brakes worked, but that wasn't it. They just walked around the trailer looking for the VIN. It was only 5 digits which seemed to present a problem, but after 10 minutes of looking, he said I was free to go.
I think it depends on who you have do the inspection at DMV. It really depends - Is it your lucky day or not? You might want to try a different DMV office next time. I think, the people at that DMV were confused with the two different numbers and decided to send you to a higher power - the CHP - to figure it out.
Cheers,
Rod

Hi Friends, I looked into having a private registration company register my Rod and Reel when I started the registration process. Look under vehicle registration service. I found them to be very expensive with estimates of several hundred dollars. Maybe I just called the wrong people. Individual results may differ, LOL. Cheers, Rod

Cheers, Rod It's usually about $50 more than doing it myself through the DMV from my experience.
