Actually, I think I DID go through American Adventure, who got my insurance through Progressive after I failed to get Progressive to do it on my own. American Adventure seems to know how to make things happen if it's possible. Was there an appraisal done? What was the 'agreed value' and your resulting premium... If you care to share that information.

I did not get an appraisal (could not find anyone qualified), but I was asked to send pictures and statements of what I spent. We bought it for 4K, spent close to another 4K in the reno, and over 150 hours of labor. I also referenced sales noted on the web and asked for an agreed value of 10K, which I believe is conservative considering the excellent original condition of our camper. We got quoted $280/year but then it got boosted to $330 after the insurance company found I had a recent speeding ticket (going 45 mph in a 35 zone!). This insurance policy seems generous in that it covers all kinds of personal liability and damage. Plus, the deductible decreases to $0 if you go without a claim for just a few years. Of course I haven't made a claim yet, and that is the real judge of an insurance company. That said, I couldn't be happier with the service from American Adventure.

We are one of "those" people who bought our 62 Shasta for $700 3 years ago, thought we could just put some "lipstick on a pig" and get rollin. We wised up and decided to do a full rebuild from the ground up. Most of the labor unfortunately we were unable to do, thus a lot of our investment is in labor hours, $35 and hour to a wonderful contractor who did fantastic work. I saved every single receipt over the last three years and have (gulp) about $30,000 into this trailer.
We have been with our local California State Farm branch for 18 years and have had 100% luck with auto claims, etc. Never a problem.
I sent the agent our blog, brought in all receipts and their trailer underwriting department (who stated they are informed/aware these trailers are similar to classic cars) insured it for the MSRP of $16,000. They "agreed" in writing that if a total loss occurs, all "upgrades" to the trailer, with receipts will be reimbursed. This covers comprehensive, vandalism, theft, fire, etc. The trailer's value will not be depreciated, if a total loss. Deductible is $50 and policy was about $200/year. They said they don't need an appraisal. Should I trust this? It seems too good to be true.
I have another call into my agent, to discuss an actual appraisal.

Be very diligent reading the fine print. I would not trust a verbal agreement and a written agreement of 16K is only half the value??
Get a certified appraisal for sure and insist they honor the value.

The agent said he was mistaken...the MSRP is $1600, not $16000 (kinda a big difference), and they dont do appraisals or agreed to values. Id be pretty reckless to accept that. So.....back to the drawing board. He referred me to a local broker who says he can get an agreed value through Haggery. Ug!!! This is frustrating. Im so grateful for this blog.

Wow. That's a HUGE "mistake"... Seems like it was almost on purpose. I'm suspicious.
Glad you are moving on and THANK YOU for getting back to us about this.

About 2 months ago someone ran into my vehicle while it was parked at a restaurant. The guy was honest enough to come find me inside the restaurant to tell me he damaged my vehicle. His insurance company is Progressive. They were quick to settle. Within a week Progressive appraiser came to my house and gave me a check for $1860. I have 2 repair estimates $3800 and $3940. The body shops both know how progressive operated they give me a check for 1/2 the repairs if I decide not to have it repaired I pocket $1800. If I decide to have it fixed Progressive will hassle the body shop to death trying to keep the price low. When Progressive appraiser was here I ask him how they plan to repair to 2 doors that are caved in. He said hammer them out, fill with bondo then paint the doors. Body shops both say doors are beyond repair because of the way they are bent but that is how Progressive works they never want to repair it the correct way. One body shop told me Federal law says I have the right to have it repaired the correct way so I can have it repaired no matter how much it costs and Progressive has to pay. I was given a warning by both body shops DONT CASH THE $1800 CHECK Progressive will claim that is full payment. I give the $1800 check to the body shop when work is finished they ask Progressive for more money before they cash the check.
When the Progressive appraiser was here looking at my vehicle I ask him if his company insures camper trailers like my 1955 Phoenix. He said yes. I ask him how the appraisal works and he said, same as cars. Body shop said, Insurance company wont pay 1 penny for MY LABOR to restore a camper trailer but if I pay someone $5000 to do all the work and have a receipt or canceled check then Progressive has to value the camper trailer at $500 for labor but they can claim the value of the trailer to be any valve that suites them. They can claim the trailer is a total loss and was only worth $1500.
My uncle has an old antique car. He told me to do business with a company that insures vintage restored cars.
I have a friend from church that lives a few miles from town he keeps his nice $12,000. camper trailer parked next to the barn behind the house. One day in June him and the wife went to church, when they came home the trailer was gone. Insurance company is refusing to pay because he can not proof the trailer was stolen. That is crazy!!! How does a person prove their trailer was stolen? Do I need a 4 camera security system to keep watch on my trailer 24 hours a day even when I go camping???
