I use a self-resetting breaker in the J box. It is not a power surge device, instead trips if a wire is shorted out. The breaker protects the trailer hot line going to the fuse block; it is on the "aux" stud. The battery hot and charge line are on the "batt" stud. If something shorts down stream of the the batt stud, the breaker will trip back and forth protecting things.
They really are simple little devices and work well but can fail. I carry an extra just in case. Of course if it fails, the hot wires can be on one stud, which bypasses the breaker. A TEMPORARY fix.
A self resetting breaker ONLY protects the hot wires and only if shorted out.
