Hello, New member here, I've bought a '64 Shasta Astrodome and need to find the vin # for DMV inspection in North Carolina. I've heard that it is supposed to be on the curbside tongue. I cannot seem to find it. Any additional help? Should it be inside or outside of the frame rail, or perhaps on top? How far forward of the body? I'm getting ready to remove the gas tank holder to see if it is underneath. Any/all help would be greatly appreciated..... DMV appointment is this afternoon.

Usually found near the top of the right frame rail just behind the coupler stamped very lightly I used a wire cup brush to remove all the paint then could barely read it. It will most likely be a 5 digit number with a letter or two in front of it. My numbers were about 3/8 of an inch high. DO NOT USED A POWER SANDER OR YOU MIGHT GRIND THEM OFF.

For future reference, they can also be on a welded plate on the inside bottom of the street side frame rail.

I found two numbers one on a plate labeled Zieman Chassis # Z-XXXXX on the street side. I also found another number on the top (same side) just behind the coupler COXXXXXXXX. I'm guessing from other posts that it's the Z number, anyone know what the other number is for?

I think Z is the chassis (frame) number. The CO # is the actual VIN. I'll have to check on mine and see.
Great that you found it Jed. I'm removing your email from your post to prevent spam. If you want it re-posted, please PM me...

Thanks Vikx & Soup, Love the visual, yes the CO # was on the top, exactly where Soup has the arrow! Thanks again, I have a feeling this Title stuff will be interesting!

Soup, Oh Soooup... Guess what? The VIN on my 56 Ham was on the A frame coupler IN THAT CIRCLE. Also on the tongue frame but it was a real shock to find the same #s in both places. The coupler actually looked more "factory". Wonder if a DMV somewhere made the owner re-stamp? Folks: the reason Soup posted as he did is that couplers can be removed and replaced. Once that happens, if the VIN is on said coupler, it's gone. Very rare to find a VIN on the coupler: And on the tongue:

Hi Vikx, Thankx for clearing up. That is strange it had the Vin # on the coupler. Very strange. Like you said probably was re-stamped on coupler by PO at some time in past.
It probably looked better than factory because the PO was more picky about how it looked. I have 4 sets of hardened machine stamps here my grandpa gave me years ago. Large and small letters and numbers. I re-stamp some of my frame rails due to the factory stamps sometimes are hardly able to be seen, often not stamped very deep. Like the person at the factory was so busy or weak that they hardly hit the stamp. I guess after you get your finger or thumb hit a few times a day and doing quite a few or more in a day you might not hit the stamp real hard either LOL
Main reasons I post that pic I keep on file is that the jack base sometimes can have manufacture and or patent number stamped on it's round base. Also the couplers can have up to 3 rows of info stamped on them. They can have patent number, patent date, max pounds limit, ball size, and manufacture part numbers in a combination of any or all the info stamped on them. Like you said also the coupler can be replaced with new so frame Vin # really shouldn't be found there. Well those reasons plus I like visuals better than worded descriptions. (picture is worth more than thousand words)
Vikx, you might find this interesting. One of the campers I had last year I actually found an old registration slip behind the stove on the floor that had fallen out of an over stuffed drawer. The PO had it titled and registered at the DMV under the coupler patent number! I found the original vin # after chemically stripping paint from the frame rail and when I titled it I got it corrected after re stamping the actual frame number that was hardly present before my re-stamping. Even after the chemical peel, the only way I could see the vin # was to lay the flashlight down along side it and let the beam of light cast across the number not aiming directly down to it. You couldn't even see the vin by aiming flash light down on it as normal.

Thanks Soup. I thought the messy VIN was the PO. Oh well, at least it was there. LOL

I actually found a document that I got from Juergen that says the 1960 Corvette's were stamped on the frame but the 61's were stamped on the threshold! Regardless the SOS (Mich DMV) was happy with the vin. So now I have to get some paperwork together for them to verify. My problem now is I have to get an appraisal?! I can use NADA to get one but Corvette trailers aren't listed. I also can have a dealership give me one but it's all in pieces now. Any suggestions? Does anyone know of another online website that I might be able to get a print out from on value? Thanks.

If it is in pieces it should lower the appraisal price decreasing the taxes due.

Here's another one on the coupler....after looking in all the usual spots on my '66 BeeLine, I found the factory VIN here.

My trailer also has a VIN in the area where the picture says it should not be. You can see the hitch information on the top (drivers side) and the VIN on the bottom. This is the only ID I have found on the trailer.
