I'm new to the vintage trailer game, but I've been wanting to find and rebuild one for awhile now. I finally found someone selling a 69 Serro Scotty HiLander close enough for me to pick up. The issue is the current owner doesn't have the title. Just a bill of sale. Which I realize is not uncommon, but I live in New Jersey and have no idea how to go about registering and getting a title for a vintage camper. Or if that is even possible with only the bill of sale. Does anyone have any words of wisdom??

Welcome Littlefathorse.
Do some research with the DMV in New Jersey for what the regulations are. If they won't work with you to procure a title, I would pass. Some States are easy, some are impossible...

Thanks! I tried looking the information up on the DMV website last night but it was painful, so looks like I will just be going there in person bright and early today to see what I have to do.

Not sure you found your answer yet.....In Kansas, the highway patrol said I didn't need a title or tag because it was under 2,000 lbs. The county office says I do need a title, but not a tag. The State office says I need both title and tag. Long story short, my Scotty is a complete rebuild frame off. So, they tell me worst case is I title it as a "home build Scotty Serro", but will have to pay taxes as if it is brand new based on the rebuild expense. Good Luck!

My 69 Hilander also came without title, and here in Ohio nobody knows how to deal with that so we go get it weighed and get a home built title. But mine had a '69 license plate with a '69 sticker on it behind a drawer and my AAA is going to see what they can do. 'No title' is a PIA but Hilanders are a good design and worth the trouble to put back in shape (so I keep telling myself after needing a total rebuild).

Hi Littlefathorse Welcome to the forum See if Your state does a "Break In Title" procedure or a "Bonded Title", that would be the easiest and quickest way if You are wanting to use the original brand and numbers on the trailer.

Thank you everyone for the input. After talking to the DMV it was pretty clear this was going to be a real hassle. According the them the trailer title was still in the previous owners name and I would have to go back to them, have them register in in their name then sign all that paperwork over to me. And thats after paying the guy who currently owns it waayyy to much for all the water damage and repairs I'd have to make. I guess I could have just claimed it was a home built trailer, but for all that effort I still feel like the price was too high. So I guess the lesson to take from this is if you live in NJ a title will be necessary. A very stern DMV supervisor told me so.
