It was in the low 30s here in Portland, Or this week. I picked up a little "Vornado" heater for bout $30. Even on the low (375 watt) setting, it kept little Hamlet plenty warm. It doesn't take much to heat 60 sq ft!

I did some research before installing the Wave catalytic heater in my Aristocrat. There is a report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission that essentially says that carbon monoxide is not a problem with catalytic heaters. The problem is oxygen depletion, so it's important to have a window or two cracked when operating the heater. The window doesn't have to be opened much. Here's the part about carbon monoxide: The peak CO concentration ranged from 68 ppm to 125 ppm and the steady state CO concentration ranged from 67 ppm to 109 ppm. Assuming a limited exposure time of up to 6.5 hours at these CO concentrations, the catalytic heater does not appear to pose a serious CO hazard to healthy adults when the CO concentration is considered by itself.
Here's what the Wave heater user manual says: I use the Wave 3 all the time and have had no problems, except that catalytic heaters are kind of directional, so it's best if you can locate the heater so it points at where you are. It will heat the whole trailer, but the warmest spot is in front of it. Gary

Here's what the Wave heater user manual says: LOL glad to see that the Wave people are concerned that the heater gets enough oxygen. Wouldn't want it to pass out or die or somethin'.

Remember Free Air is not the size of the opening, but the size after the reduction for any screens, louvers or anything else in the opening. Do things right if you are using fossil fuel heat we don't want any body waking up dead. Also remember that gas lights and ovens put out heat along with deadly gases also they burn the O2 that you need to breath. Be careful!!! All of the above heat sources can be used safely if you follow the proper procedures. Winter camping can offer some fantastic times and the parks usually aren't crowded have fun this winter. A tip for those using your cook stove for heat is get an empty metal can wash it out and punch holes in both the top and bottom place it on the burner and it serves as a radiator and helps to heat the air much better.

I ordered and just received an iHeater. It is really compact and plugs directly into a wall socket. It is 400W and heats up to 250 sq. ft. I ordered mine from a AAA ad for $35 shipping included. A teardrop friend posted it on another forum and gave it a glowing review. I haven't tried it out in the compact, because she has no windows or back end at the moment, but I did try it out in my home and I love it. You can get them from other sources, too. Amazon has them for $49. image by susieqilvu, on Flickr image by susieqilvu, on Flickr The plug rotates 180 but it will not work on a sideways outlet.

Am I the only one that sees the irony in Pagan Marc asking about heater ideas, esp right around Halloween? <grin>

Those little heaters look like they would be great. If a person bought two of them and had one at each end of the trailer they would probably keep it very evenly heated and comfortable.

SusieQ I prefer electric hook up all the time. when not available then I have to make do. I am spoiled and don't like to make do anymore, did that for years when campgrounds didn't have electric.

Bill, we have some great local National Forrest campgrounds with primitive camping. They are usually very uncrowded, sometimes we are the only ones there, and they are CHEAP. I like my hookups, too, but I found we could camp twice as long for the same price if we forewent the hookups. There is even BML land out West that had free camping spots, even better, but totally primitive. I can handle the heat, but I don't tolerate cold very well!!!
Big Bend NP was one of our favorite outings this past summer and the campgrounds were primitive with the exception of one small, parking lot type private campground that was twice as much as the NP campgrounds and I think the electric might have even been metered. We camped primitively for two weeks there... no showers, either. We cooked on the Coleman stove, ran out of food, resorted to the case of emergency Ramen noodles, had to go find water, drove 30 miles one way to pay for A shower and slept with a fan on us in the 4x8 teardrop. Used my solar panels for power. Best experience we had on the whole two month trip! Now, I'm from hurricane country and said I would never camp without amenities because it was too much like hurricane aftermath. Have I ever changed my tune!
I had originally planned on finding a camper to restore and going only electric with it because I'm not fond of propane. Then I found this one with the great gas stove and gas light totally intact and functional. Changed my mind, lol. I'll be set for boon docking and hook ups!
I wish I could find a non electric alternative for heat that I was comfortable with, but I haven't yet and probably won't.

I was in the west in the early 60s and camped many nights in totally free camp sites that offered nothing but a water pump, a lot of those nights we had the entire area to just us and the wildlife. I wouldn't trade that experience for any thing but being 50 years older I still like electric on a near by post. Most of our state parks now have electric and are reasonable.

In the Compact, the gas lamp alone gives off enough heat. At night a down comforter (or sleeping bag) will keep you toasty. The coldest it's been with Hamlet has been 19F, and I did fine with my comforter and a pair of sweats. First thing in the morning, I fire up the lamp, heat water for tea, and in about 5 minutes, I have to turn something off. It's nicer if I can use the tiny electric heater, but if the electricity goes off, I'm still covered.

In our truck campers years ago we usually had to open a window a little if we ran the gas light very long or we had a sauna. Another thing that will heat a trailer quickly is take a tomato juice can (large) wash it out punch holes in the top and bottom and place it on the cook stove, it will amaze you but remember any gas burning thing gives off deadly gases and removes the oxygen from the air so always open the roof vent a little or a window. This has been said before but it can't be said enough.
