WHY do people lock them self inside the camper with AC and not come out? If you insist on having AC why don't you stay home?
We have camped for 55 years with NO AC and no heat. Coleman stove and ice chest works great for places with no electric. We have camped in the desert, mountains, wilderness, and don't need electric but we us it when it is free with the camp site rental. WE NEVER cook inside the camper even if it rains or snows. Part of what makings camping fun is enjoying the outdoors.

Short answer. Because I can.
If I'm going to spend the time and money, and time, and time, to build/rebuild a camper. WHY NOT make it comfortable. Most of my camping is in the summer, and it's 105 down here, with a humidity of 80 percent. I'll be honest, sitting in a metal box in that is not fun. Sure the fan helps, but if I can camp more and more often because I have an AC, you bet I will.
And that's just me. Try and convince a wife and 2 kids under the age of 8 to sweat their.... off to "go camping". For me it's about getting them to have fun, and the experience that we have together as a family. Ask anyone I know, I am VERY passionate about my teardrop(ish) camper and the place it has taken us. I think building it is one of the best family activity decisions I have made. Doing it without an AC, in Kansas in July... Why? Just so I can say I did?
Having said all that. I will be the first to comment about those that just "sit in their camper all day".. We (being part of teardrop groups and gatherings) will be the first ones out of the camper in the morning, and the last ones to bed. We enjoy seeing what's going on around us, and talking with those that we meet along the way , and at the campsite. It's a different experience to all of us I guess though, to each his (or her) own...
Just my 2 cents.

We pretty much live outside, but we do have air which we use at night when it's really hot. I love being outside though whenever possible. We also tent camp and backpack around the world. We have a lot of cool, beautiful equipment for that, which we bought at a MEC a Canadian mountain equipment company. I feel comfortable doing both. As to people who sit all day in their trailers, I am pretty sure they are the same people who sit all day in front of their tv's when not camping. They definitely are not the ones, standing in a garage escaping goop off a 50 year old trailer before taking it camping! lol, My favourite absurdity is the outside hatch, with the 50 inch TV screen in it so that those inside people can sit outside, and disturb the entire campground with their flat screen and surround sound. When they own that feature, I prefer they stay inside!

I don't mind being out doors when I am doing something but I like to sleep in air conditioned comfort. Same as riding in my vehicle I like to ride in a comfortable vehicle but when I arrive I get out and do whatever I want. For many years I lived without A/C but then I discovered how nice it is to sleep in air conditioned comfort instead of on wet sweaty sheets, so now I'm spoiled and think I deserve A/C. Also many children have never slept in a hot sticky bed so they rest better and are not grumpy the next day.

Im usually always outside while camping. The only time I could see A/C being nice to have is when were sleeping. I probably wont install one, but I do understand why others do. We dont have central AC in my house, just a window one in the bedroom that only gets turned on when its really hot.

I don't have AC in the camper but I wish we did. The mountains in the summer are fine but not the beach. As Dan said, it gets over 100 degrees here with humidity that is worse than Haiti. My camper on the beach in July is the equivalent of a cell in a North Korean prison.
My days of proving how tough I am are over. Give me a memory foam mattress in a dry camper with at least a Fantastic Fan.

We do not use air but I wonder if everyone at campgrounds is there to camp or are they traveling? We have used our camper to stay in when going to out of town weddings, funerals and reunions mainly because I strongly dislike staying in hotels/ motels. I like to have my own bedding and stuff around me. When we are camping we usually spend much of our time outdoors but there have been times when we have had obligations that included travel and some of the comforts/ luxuries are nice to have at those times. Having said that, there is little I hate more then being in a beautiful serene national park campground parked right next to that big rig with the generator going all night long😤😤😤

Yep, sleeping is a big one. We have a (normally) annual trip to the Colorado River near Blythe, usually in the July-August time frame. Temps get up above 100 regularly and it doesn't cool down appreciably at night. In years past we have tent camped with no fly over the tent and fans going full blast and it's still miserable. Once our trailer is done, you can bet I'll be using the AC.

I am talking about people that park their RV for several days and never come out. They set inside with AC watching satellite TV all day and all night. They cook inside, eat inside, shower inside, sleep inside. They never come outside so WHY are they camping?
Most camp grounds do not allow generators the ones that do usually have a certain camper area just for generators only. National Parks we have been to have designated generator camp sites. I have seen campers get kicked out for refusing to turn off their generator no one wants to listen to that noise.
One time we camped for a week at the Smokey Mountains Dec 26 to Jan 2. It was 20 degree weather there was only 3 people in the whole camp ground 1 was a big rig Bus with a generator. We parked far from the bus but the generator was still noisy. On the 5th day the 2 people were out for a walk around the camp ground they walked past us and stopped to talk. Turns out husband and wife both retired sold their house used the money to buy at big RV now they live in it full time in all the national parks. They said, "we do not consider our selves to be campers we live here, we have a washer and dryer and a dish washer too, we read books and watch TV all day every day, some times we come out to get a little exercise. We have been here almost 2 weeks we stock up on food when we move to a different camp ground. In 2 days we check out drive to town stock up on food come back here stay another 2 weeks." LOL there has to be more to life than TV and books until you die sounds like RV prison to me.

Are there campgrounds out there that have "no generator" areas for trailers? Hamlet is so small that we have been allowed to camp o er night in tent areas a few times, but I don't expect that would happen very often.

I get your point Gary, but at least they are checking out different parts of the country, meeting folks like you. "RV prison" sounds better to me than just sitting in some crappy little house, or nursing home, waiting to die.

to each their own is an old expression that fits. Why do some "camp" in a motor coach with granite counter tops and satellite TV? Thats their choice.

I really can't figure out why some people come to VTT and ask questions, then refuse to accept the answers.
