My neighbor is a rep for a coating company and was so excited to "gift" me a HUGE bucket of white Elastomeric coating that he said I " really needed" to use on my 1966 Shasta roof. I did some research online and looked on here as well, and it seems the opinions on using a roof coating on a vintage trailer are somewhat divided, and for the most part, pretty negative. My roof is currently uncoated. I got up there yesterday to remove my old vent and scrubbed the roof down, and just a good scubbing took the paint off to the bare aluminum. The roof is in really good shape, other than having quite a few hail dents. That aluminum does seem so thin, and my thought was that coating would help protect from any future hail storms. I had originally planned to use the product, but after reading some comments on here...I am now leaning toward NOT coating it, and would welcome some suggestions about how to explain to my neighbor... why I am NOT going to use his very nice gift. ??

If you live where hail is a common occurence then you should treat it like your car and keep it under a solid cover. The investment for a metal RV cover is about the same as ordering a new roof if you have to pay for shipping. A new roof for your Shasta with shipping is probably going to cost around $700 and I have seen metal covers for not much more than that. Especially if you install it yourself.
As far as whether you need the coating or not is concerned, I look at that stuff just like I do calking... If you have leaks now, this is only a temporary fix. If you don't have leaks now, what do you need it for? It's not going to save the roof from more hail damage. And because these trailers are built to be flexible it won't seal any seams for very long before the seal splits.... If you want to protect the investment of time and money you have or will have in your trailer, get it under a cover and try to plan your vacations when it is least likely to hail. I know that can be hard at times but it's the best we can do.

Jane, Put me in for no overall roof coating vote. As far as what to tell him.... "Well neighbor, about that roof coating gift, it was very nice but now that I have decided to go with the polished plain aluminum (no paint) on the top half of the camper, and sense I don't have any leaks up there, I've decided that I didn't want white coating on the top of polished aluminum, on top of paint bottom. It would look too much like a Neapolitan ice cream can. Roof coatings overall, on a vintage aluminum roof, lower the resale price too. Thanks anyway. Here's 2 free passes to whatever to try to help relay my sorrow for not using it. But again I want to thank you for the roof coating but I just don't need it on this particular camper now that I have been on the roof inspecting it closer." (laying the BS on thick, not the coating, while stating the above) Good Luck, be nice, apologetic, smile with a concern of sorrow on your brow for not using his fine product, while offering free diner passes or what not for him and his wife as a patch over. But hey, don't ask me....what the heck do I know about getting along with neighbors. I've chased all mine off!! OH! Almost forgot. I LOVE the all polished aluminum top with painted bottom look you are going for on your Shasta!!!! It's looking really good in your avatar pic.

Please, NO!
That stuff is the bane of us all. It doesn't seal leaks and can cause metal rot when it fails. (note "when" not "if") Elastomeric coatings are useful for UV reflection on house roofs. That's about it. I've spent days picking and scraping this goop, swearing all the while. A coated roof lowers the value of the trailer and makes it almost impossible to repair. I've even replaced the entire roof because of it.
I'm sorry about the neighbor. What about coating the underbelly with it? lol. I agree with Soup, nice shiny roof. Perhaps you could mention roof coatings aren't allowed at rallies??? Or you will lose judging points??

This thread needs a pic. I don't think I'd coat the whole roof, either. I am using elastomeric tape over my seams, though. But my roof looked like this: I was lucky enough to have both kinds of goop! Black goop AND silver crap. Lots 'n' lots of both. New roof vent, so that must have been after the tree fell on it.

These responses gave me a good chuckle!! Thanks for the feedback...I pretty much figured that was the consensus! (And Soup...how I have missed all your funny commentaries!)
Vikx, I am intrigued by your thought of using it to coat the underside. Soup had told me I needed to seal the underside before winter. If I was to use this product for that, how would I go about it? I'm already wondering how I get the trailer jacked up to get underneath. I am guessing it would all have to be scrubbed down clean prior to coating? It seems like a daunting project, so therefore I've been ignoring it as long as possible.

Actually, if it was a Shasta Airflyte I could give you a perfectly good roof for it. Only has a few little dents in the front and they could be fixed but I didn't want to do that so I ordered a new one. But this one is fine. Anyone need a metal roof set for an Airflyte? Came off a 59....

Well, it depends on the belly material. If it's metal, just wire brush it. The same with wood, but be sure it is in good condition and/or repaired. The old fibrous Celotex probably just needs a good stiff whisk brooming. I'm guessing you could paint it with a brush but lotsa drips. Snow Sh*t is goopy, so maybe not. The neighbor will croak.
