The absolute 3 worst people to turn loose on a trailer project are..... 3. An engineer. You should just never turn an engineer loose on any hands on project. They will re-design every single screw, nail and board in the trailer. It will be way over budget and it will never be completed. Hey! Some of us are able to listen and learn...

My Dad was an engineer and he could fix anything! I guess there are engineers and then there are engineers... so glad I inherited his fix it attitude.

I had been in construction work remodeling houses for 20 years when along came an engineer who's house we began to remodel. He worked on the space shuttle design. He was the reason I included engineers in my post LOL...

My Dad was an engineer and he could fix anything! I guess there are engineers and then there are engineers... so glad I inherited his fix it attitude. Both of my parents were schoolteachers. That meant something totally different back then. It was long before teachers were demonized for "living on our tax dollars", having a functional union, and having "the whole summer on vacation". My Dad put in a lot of 15-hour days painting houses and doing landscape work and teaching in summer school feeding us kids during the summers, teachers do not get paid for the summer months. It was before the time when teachers were nothing more than full-time daycare for most people, and were pushed into methods of teaching that demonstratively do not work, and more recently have had to also be armed security guards. I also grew up in a time when we were taught to share our toys and our snack crackers, before "greed is good" became our national mantra. I don't know a lot about engineering but do know something about physics, mathematics, and civics. I grew up when we were taught to think and reason, not just memorize and repeat... If one takes even the slightest amount of time to think about the way these campers are coming apart when they are gutting them and doing "all the hard part", they might then realize that there were reasons they were built the way they were 40 and 50 years ago. The common denominator is always ignorance. I am really glad we have this forum to chase away some of the ignorance, and that some people actually accept the help. I certainly don't know much about the engineering, but if I can help someone to think it through, then I have accomplished something dear to my heritage...teaching. I'm not really sorry about the rant, Appropriate apologies will be extended if I stepped on any toes.

A great thread. Honest and straightforward.
One thing I will say in defense of gutting from the inside, if somebody wants a stationary camper at a permanent site I don't think it will do a lot of harm. Doing it saves time and effort but at a price. It may never be roadworthy again.
It's also worth adding that we're not talking about replacing one small piece from the inside. It's not the best way to do it but a one or two foot section of birch (IMO) will not make a camper unsafe.
Gutting it is another story.
With all that said, anybody planning on buying a camper to gut make it 1980 or newer. Please!

Please keep in mind that my comments about architects and engineers should be taken very lightly. Without the engineers, bridges, buildings and any other type of structure or common household items would be impossible to make. Same goes for the architects. So take it tongue in cheek and please remember I am just having fun at others expense sometimes. Now as far as construction workers are concerned, they are a whole nother animal and need to be retrained for trailer work. You all know why too.

And if this girl had said they planned to put it in their back yard and keep it forever and gutted it to rebuild from the inside, that's all well and good. But she is "restoring" them this way, and gutted this one, and wanted to sell it as is... for $2,000! Insanity. Pure insanity.

Theresa, please check into your State's child protective laws. If this person has had at least two previous vintage campers and abused them as this one was abused a restraining order should be put into place forbidding her to come within 500 feet of any orphan vintage camper in the future. Failure to comply should result in prompt arrest (by SWAT if she does not come peacefully), conviction and a lengthy prison sentence, imho! Oh and to quote a great philosopher...stupid is as stupid does...

I have been around the Airstream community for 15 or so years. I get really irked when I see the numbers of people who buy an older Airstream, POLISH it, Gut it and try to sell it. They always ask way too much. Saw a recent 60s model, for 10,000 like that. So many great trailers gone because of that practice. Greedy, and uniformed. I will be glad when the craziness is over and truly interested, well meaning people are the ones who buy.

Theresa… thanks for sharing. I think this is reenforcement that "lipstick" on a deteriorated trailer is a heck of a lot better than the uninformed "gutting" we're seeing in your posts. My '60 Mobile Scout had just gotten one of those clever cosmetic makeovers when I purchased it, so when I decided to rebuild it I had an intact original specimen with A LOT of old material, appliances, and cabinetry available to make the restoration a satisfying experience. In my travels (I live in the southwest) I'm still seeing lots of those deteriorated, but intact specimens that have not been gutted or tampered with too much and are great candidates for proper restoration or rebuild.
