I have a metal carport also. Be ABSOLUTELY SURE that your local zoning accepts them and what size. Both my cousin and I had to remove our portable metal carports within a 5 year period. (State of Wa) So whose zoning are you referring to? State, county or city? We are in rural King county.

I believe Wa. cities and counties dictate what you can do with portables. With mine, it was deemed not portable because it was older than 6 months...

A little sneak peek here at my new "Carport".... This is the new shop that I will be moving to in about a month... I bought a half acre of property with this shop on it. It also came with a Mobile Home. More to come later. I'll have a video walk through tour up soon so you can see the entire place. The shop is 30'deep by 40' wide and is completely insulated. That big roll up door is 10' x 10'. Plenty of room inside to work on an 18 foot trailer. I don't work on anything larger than that. The property is in Nevada so I'll be a little closer to many of you.

Larry,a 30 x 40 shop looks huge ...until you start moving in all your tools and a project, that's the same size as mine and I built it long before I ever owned a camper and naturally I don't have a 10 x 10 door.
Congratulations on a place to work without worrying about the weather, Danny

That is so cool...the tall door looks like it was made for a vintage trailer.

My tools don't take up that much room either. This hobby doesn't really require too many tools. I look forward to purchasing an 8 foot hand brake now though. Been wanting one of those for YEARS... Now I have a place to put it. Also you can't see it from that photo but there are four large sky lights in the roof so it's light in there in the day time...

What's the climate like there in Nevada? Do you have a/c?
My climate is so hot and humid in south louisiana. my old shop, which i now rent out, never had a/c and the summers were tortuous. my home shop, which is only 20x20 has a/c. it makes all the difference in the world.

Congrats and here's to hoping everything works out well with the move. I'm sure that enclosed, insulated space will be nice!

I suppose your right,I built my shop for the express purpose off vintage car & hot rod restoration and I have a lot of big tools for doing sheet metal work. This was my dream shop and I do have heat and air, insulated to the max, sheet rock and painted. I have a friend that is a builder that I have ask to come and see if he can enlarge the 4th roll up door on the back of the shop,I will have to await his answer but ifor the time being in need to get a cover or tarp to protect the camper. Danny Danny, the best tarps sold are from Tarps Direct. www.tarpsonline.com I use the Silver Poly... They can custom make your size too and add grommets if you want. Very inexpensive too. Only a few dollars more than the big box stores but they last up to two years in the hot sun. The big box store types only last a month or two.

It can get up to the low 90s and even hit 100 there in the summer. But it's insulated and I will add AC. For the winter I will need to heat the place because it can get down to 10...

Hi Friends,
Good thread.
What I dont' see is discussion on the "bed". I have some interest in the metal structures like what Ten posted for ShelterAmerica.com.
What is the trailer sitting on(bed) if you are using one of these metal carports. Asphalt, dirt, gravel, concrete?
Where I live, I have issues like what Dan Rhodes has with wind. His is more severe, but it gets blustery here at times and I am shying away from using a fabric covered carport. One is I don't want the structure "walking" from the wind. I would want a structure that was "grounded".
For the sake of discussion, the property where I can park my trailers is zoned for horses. I wonder if that might help...
Cheers,
Rod

I recently got a metal carport put up. My location is on a slight cross slope so I built a 1 foot high pressure treat retaining wall on the down hill side with a 2x6 pt top plate lagged to it. On the uphill side, at grade, I put small 1cf footings about 5 feet apart very level with each other, set a simpson plate anchor in each and fastened a 2x6 pt to that. Plates on both sides are level with each other. The bottom of the structure is a 2 1/2" square galv. tube and we lagged that to the plates. Just went through those record breaking Jan storms here in northern CA and no problems. Hope this helps.
