Hello everyone!
I've been looking online to get ideas for redoing the upholstery in my late sixties trailer (1968 - edited from 1966 sorry! - Ace of Hearts 14')
MANY MANY posts are simply links to Pinterest photos, which is fine, but I'm really looking for more authentic original color schemes. I've started looking at pictures of sixties home interiors to get some ideas, but I am having a problem and would love some help.
First of all, are there any places I can see original (or close to) color schemes of trailers and campers? I love seeing how people have made them over, but I'm less interested in Glamping (with the accompanying buntings and ubiquitous red and turquoise) and much more interested in making our adorable trailer look true to period even if it's considered somewhat "ugly" by today's standards.
Next, our color scheme on the exterior is white with a stripe that was originally gold, then painted over with dark blue, and finally painted with green house paint that is peeling. I'm seriously considering going back to the original gold!!! But I could be convinced to go with a brick red or other more bland color. In my book, subtlety is supreme. I'm not going for shock and awe with cuteness! It needs to be repainted in spots, but a good pressure wash needs to happen before everything else and then we shall see where it takes us.
Onto my concern: the interior is GORGEOUS. I love it almost too much. The walls are the original quilted aluminum on all four walls, the front and back are white and the sides are light robin's egg blue. The cabinetry is all lightly stained wood (birch? maple?). The countertops are formica white with gold flecks, and all fixtures and trim are golden/brass. So where does that leave me? I want to do a sixties color scheme, I'm thinking brown, blue, and white. I don't want it to be too monochromatic, but I thought with two small boys I should have it colorful so spills aren't noticeable, and also somewhat matching the existing walls. Here's my plan: cushions will be light brown on backs and sides (I sew), and the fronts will be a floral pattern in brown, light blue, and white, as close to "sixties" as I can get. The curtains will be paisley blue, brown, and white. I'd like to redo the floor with a checkerboard pattern of linoleum squares, diagonally placed instead of straight, and that would be wonderful in white and another light color (blue? Maybe too matchy-matchy?) to keep the interior feeling open and bright. I would like some extra throw pillows in a bit more bright colors to pop out, maybe a deep turquoise or avocado green. I'd LOVE to do orange, but I don't know if I can pull it off. I'm TOTALLY willing to completely revamp all of this. In fact, if I could do a red or brick red instead I'd love that because all of our "camping dishes" (we are long-time tent campers and this is our first trailer!!!) are red and we have many many red towels and other kitchen equipment from when we used to have red in our home kitchen (we switched to blues and greens instead and all that stuff is just itching to be used again!). But light blue and red scream "fifties" to me, canned ham and cherries and all that. I don't want to force a color scheme that doesn't truly fit, or worse yet, look like I didn't actually know the difference between the decades.
What do you think, anyone? How can I make this look authentic to the late sixties, not be too matchy-matchy, and MAYBE EVEN use old dishes and towels? Could I do brick red with light blue and white upholstery and make it match the correct decade? Yes, I know, someone is going to say, "You're overthinking this." Yes, yes I am. I am on a tight budget, I have two small children and work full time, and if I spend the time purchasing and sewing all the cushion covers and curtains, I want to look at them and smile for years to come. I want to overthink this so I'm proud of my decision. I have time to work, all winter in northern Vermont, in fact, but I don't want to spend a lot of money and then regret my decision. Is there a place for me to do research on sixties interiors that worked for others? Is there a repository of ORIGINAL color schemes of travel trailers? I feel like the walls in our trailer are pretty unique compared to a lot of pictures I've seen and that has thrown me off!
Thanks in advance for your ideas and resources!
