Hello all! I'm happy to say Matilda is almost down to the bare metal! What a journey it's been. A bit more flooring to go.
I've been told I should have someone measure the frame and make sure it's perpendicular and parallel in the right places so it's roadworthy, tires will wear evenly, and in general good shape for a rebuild beyond just checking the rust. The back rail is twisted pretty bad (my advisor didn't know that), and it is pretty rusted. I'll try to take as much off of it as I can first and check for rust, but beyond that I have no idea.
I have no idea what this evaluator's job is? Who do I call? Auto body shop? Camper specialists? I live in the Portland, Oregon area if you have particular references. Thanks!

There should be a frame and axle place somewhere around Portland. They usually have a welding shop, sell and mount trailer axles, repair frames, that sort of thing. It also could be called a machine or fabricating shop. A quick call and they will tell you if they can inspect frames or where to go...

Thanks Vikx! I let you know how it goes. Pictures in a few when I have time to take all the wood off.

Walter Sayers of Second Chance Camper Restorations in Tampa, FL advised me to look for hairline cracks in the A-frame part of the trailer, a common location for stress. Of course I found one while going over the trailer with my welder. On my second frame- same location and there was a bigger hole that someone had tried to do a weld patch and did not cover the hole completely. This will have to be fixed. Any hole that water can seep into the frame will cause rusting from the inside and weaken it. Good luck with your project.
